Sage Grouse, Idaho,Mont. 3 day trip

After traveling a total of 1100 miles I made it home late last night from an incredible trip. My travels took me to a lek near Dubois, Idaho where I had some great information in regards to one of the best leks in the state. I of course took River with me as we are inseperable. Please relaize that these pics were all taken after 8:00pm Idaho time so the quality was a huge challange for me to get really goods shots. The lighting was less than poor at best. I am also enclosing some shots of scenery and wildlife on my way to and from. The Sage grouse is the largest of all grouse and there courtship rituals are amazing. They congregate at these leks for numerous decades. Thank God for me having a lens with an f stop of 2.8 or there would be no shots at all. Just lots of memories of the blurping noise of over 70 males near my blind drumming there chest. The females showed up at dark so no shots of them. I could see them sneak in but not enough lighting for a shot. Thaks for looking

Our camp the first night on Rock Creek 30 miles east of Missoula. I was really ruffing it. HeHe

After a good nights sleep and while driving down Rock creek I spotted this big Tom doing his thing showing off for the ladies.

The next 13 pics is what I came up with watching the Grouse.

Now the drive home. These pics are of the Lemhi Mountains on my way to Salmon Idaho. As you can see, Mother nature is trying to hold onto Winter.

Now for the wildife shots I took on the way home. I saw more than 500 head of mule deer and at least 1000 head of Elk and Antelope.

These next two shots were taken from 1 mile away.

The Mule deer looked as though they wintered well.

And my last photo of some Antelope.

I hope you enjoyed the trip as much as I did. Can't wait to go again next Spring when my trip will take me to Montana to some of the better leks over there.

Great pics thank you for posting.

Ill be making my final trip to MT in two weeks.
Final because it will be our new home.

Boy did you ever have fun. Super shots, Gary. What was your lens of choice on the mountain scenery shots? Just plain spectacular. Loved seeing the grouse shots and that of your burrowing owl. Thanks so much.

Gary,

Nice trip..nice sage "chicken" shots... The nicer buck antelope has a low location for the prongs, interesting looking.

The Lemhi is a favorite place of mine, there is also some nifty country to the west.

Gary - What's a lek ? Love the shots of the grouse..........the 2.8 was the ticket ! Super light on the antelope - thanks for posting !
I have been looking for an owl all winter, I never thought about one on the ground, imagine it's a western bird ?

Awesome shots Gary! Hearing Rock Creek brings back memories of trout fishing with my brothers out there many years ago. That is beautiful country indeed and it looks like you and River had a great time. Seeing those turkeys has me itching to get out since my season opens tomorrow but with a forecast of three to five inches of snow I have a feeling it might be a little slow. Thanks for posting.

Thanks for the compliments guys.

Doug, Lucky you to get to live in Montana.

Al, The lens in question for the scenery shots is a Tokina 16.5mm - 135mm F-3.5 DX. I just purchased it for scenery shots so I can go wide or in tight. Looks like its going to work oK

Sarge, We have burrowing owls out west here. They like the sage brush areas and like to be left alone.

Rich, I guess the trout fishing is very good there. Never have fished it as I don't have to go that far to catch trout. We have a number of good trout streams with in 75 miles from Spokane.

Outstanding again Gary.. great looking birds, think they belong to the grouse family, spend a few very early mornings in sweden watching a black grouse lek.

Thankyou for taking the time to share again..

See you december 2012.

Hey Gary, great trip, not many people love birds enough to do trips like that. Great pics as well.

We are doing a big spring/summer trip next summer and I've been thinking about trying to see all the Prairie Grouse on leks. We are planning on taking Gus to see the western parks and doing a big loop (CT-MT-WY-CA-CT), so we will drive right through all the species range.

Gary-

NOw that turkey is one gorgeous turkey....who knew that Osceolas could be found all the way up in WA. I'd love to see those wings on a bird down here. That sure is a neat bird...

going through animal behavior right now in college, we just talked about leks. we even used this same species as an example. its awlays good when you learn something and can actually use it. nice camper, that is what i want to get for when i go on my long road trips. definetly beats a hotel

awesome pics too

Gary,
as always thanks for posting those great shots. Sure do like seeing the west in its glory even if it does have to be on a screen on a lap top.

Enjoy the rest of the spring.
