Season recap...

Below is my season recap, a couple of the first pics are reposts here of Beaver's first retrieves, but otherwise it is all new stuff (unless you follow me on Instagram: Tod Osier on Instagram).

The season was a slow one here according to nearly everyone I talked to - including other hunters, the local warden and the state biologist. I did pretty well considering and enjoyed my season far more than many I've had. Hunting with Beaver has been an absolute pleasure and I only expect it to get better.

The young 'un had his first real hunt in October. We had a good day, I had scouted the previous day and found the motherlode of ducks for CT, but they flew the coop overnight. I was able to scratch out a couple, but it was slow.

First retrieve, Beaver is on his way.

Beast with his birds from his first day.

Had another slow, but good day the next day. He started the day with a nice 60 yard real big boy retrieve. He could use some work in the style department and this is not the best photo, but gave a glimmer of what would make it an even better day.

I really enjoyed watching him figure out how the hunting worked, this duck dog thing is hard for a young 'un.

Hero shot with jewelry. Called the band in and it was a local bird, but at least 4 years old. Third retrieve, first band.

I got a nice rut-crazed buck during archery. Big bodied deer at 180 pounds.

Deer had been in a serious accident at some point, face was twisted with signs of broken bones and messed up musculature in the rear end. Nice wide deer, crossbow bolt is 20".

Slow days made for good learning. Beaver took his first in field hand signal to this duck.

Got Gus out a couple times between school activities.

Slow pick on a cold day.

Turned that pair of black ducks into carnitas, which was really a fun experiment. Brined and smoked the two ducks in the morning and then braised with some pork belly all day.

Final product with queso fresco, salsa fresca, homemade corn tortillas. I'm a big fan of homemade corn tortillas, super easy and great.

Setup for goldeneyes one day and shot a neat double, two immatures - one a Common and one a Barrow's. Beaver's first real big boy double in big water.

I believe that the last time I got a Barrow's was well over 20 years ago in Washington.

Nice pair of Blacks.

Tore some shit up.

Broke a tooth on a TSS pellet in turkey.

Took a turn too tight and put the trailer through a ditch.

Oops, went through a couple props this year. This one was brand new (newly refurbished) that day.

Getting down to the coast along with the rock hazards for the boat, there is the ever-present sharp oyster.

Lotta sunrises.

Sweet day in the band department.

Coming in I could see bands and hear jingling, but I was confused. I saw orange then green.

Hot diggity dog, sporting some gaudy-ass New Yawk-style costume jewelry.

Last day birds. The weather had been awful with high winds the previous days, but I was able to sneak out to one of my favorite spots and get my brant before the wind picked up too bad.

Last day, putting the boat in the barn. 19 seasons on the boat - big thanks to duckboats.net (which wasn't duckboats.net then) for the inspiration and help all those years ago.

Nice recap Tod,

That is one good looking dog. Our season was slow for ducks as well. South Michigan has a late split in January for two days. I was able to get out the last day and ended the season with a triple on Goldeneye. They are beautiful. Have never shot a Barrows.

That's a lot of bling on one bird!

Tod,
I haven't talked to anyone this year that hasn't said this is a below average waterfowl year. You seemed to have made the best of it and found quite a few birds, seems like beaver enjoyed every birds he retrieved too.

It looks like you had a really fun season. Thanks for posting the recap and congratulations to Beaver on doing so well.

I too had located the "motherload" of ducks one day and set up on them the next day and found them to be mostly gone.

Nice Job Tod. I need to learn from you because admittedly all I did was complain all season at how poor it seemed....had trouble seeing the bright spots. Well done.

Great recap of your season. Sounds like a great one to me, except for the props🤣. I too had a fun season in CT.

That is great! How'd the new boat end up working for you?

Beaver looks great! Looks like he had a good year!

Glad I was introduced to Sharon's dogs through your pics and stories. He has been a true pleasure and at the same time about the oddest animal I've had - definitely shaping up to be my favorite dog ever. What a ball of muscle and sinew and drive, but also what a lover and companion for the whole family.

Tod,
Cool photos, thanks for sharing.

Good to see you Dave, I was thinking of checking the obits for you since I hadn't seen you around here! BTW, THANKS too :).

If you could share the recipe that would be great.

Congrats on a very good season.

Larry

Thanks Larry, I can't help much on a recipe per se, but I'll link a page below written by J. Kenji Lopez-Alt that has a recipe and details the preparation well. If you want to modify the recipe you can smoke then braise the meat rather than just braise, use duck and pork belly rather than pork butt, use cumin and oregano for spices rather than cinnamon, brown carne in cast iron vs broiler, and make a more conventional salsa fresca. [;)] Kenji's stuff is very solid, but sometimes borders on overly tedious.

Thanks! I like that late spilt in MI. I'd love a 2 day hunt in Feb even better :). I always loved the late split in upstate NY where I grew up, lotta blacks and goldeneyes in the memories. New York's coastal zone is open now and I have a license, but I can't get inspired to drive a couple hours around NYC to hunt it.

The new boat worked out excellent for me. I am able to hide it in the marsh almost as good as the Estuary, but my seating position in the DI works out better for me. I'm able to position the boat against the bank and hunt off the side. It just works great for me.
Covid tried to ruin my season too! My buddy with a Duck Water boat that we use in LIS got quarantined, then got Covid-19. This ended his season, and using his boat for sea ducks and divers just before Christmas.
I picked my days, and took my DI out off LIS for divers and sea ducks a few times. On a calmer day, it worked out great.
I'm happy with the boat, and had the most fun this season ever.
I'm trying to tell my buddy that we are getting more ducks here rather than less. You just have to hunt the ducks that are here, and not go for the ones you wish were here, if that makes sense.
I see you have 2 great hunting partners too!
