Our ISP (Carbon 60) broke off the web hosting portion of their business and sold it to another company (Easy On Net). As of right now the site is still being hosted by Carbon 60 but that will end in the next few weeks. Since yesterday I've been talking to Easy On Net to work out a plan to move the site to their servers. This is not an easy move as the entire forum script and much of the support code, framework, and configuration was developed and maintained by Carbon 60 personnel. Those folks are not part of Easy On Net and I have learned from these discussions it will be largely on me to get the site running on their servers. This is a HUGE task and one that I never intended to do. We always paid Carbon 60 to take care of the code and keep it running in addition to upgrades and new user functions. I feel abandoned by them. I asked if Easy On Net had some reach-back to get support from Carbon 60 personnel and was told no.
At this point I don't know what I'm in for hours wise, but I'm very concerned about the task at hand and being able to pull it off, especially before our old provider yanks the plug. There are a lot of moving parts to this website and tens of thousands of lines of code with calls to who knows how many 3rd party libraries like MySQL and ImageMagic, to name a few. Moving to a new forum script isn't something I'll do because it would mean everything from day one on this forum would be lost and I place high value on the posts, pictures, and information that is still at our fingertips. It's pretty much a get it working or the end of us type of situation as I see it.
I wish I had some good news and definitive information, but this was all dropped in my lap as of yesterday morning and I'm supposed to be going on vacation from now until Jan 31 with only a few days in the office. I planned to hunt every chance possible with Thomas and friends.
Maybe my worries are unfounded, but I just don't know what it will take to get this place up and running elsewhere. I'd rather be upfront about the unknows than just vanish without warning.
I will keep everyone updated as I work through the issues and hope to have good news. But honestly, I'm very concerned.
