Some pheasant fun

Had to take Deuce out today to burn some energy off of him. Yeah it sucks but it just has to be done. :)

We have been running into some birds lately but I haven't been shooting too well. The main reason for no photos for a couple weeks. I keep meaning to carry the camera along to get photos in the field but with the rains we had this year the cover is extra thick. Not the most fun to walk through with a heavy camera around your neck.

Well today we tried a new piece of cover for us. It's a large Walk In Area with some marshy areas in it. We hadn't gone too far in when a hen busted out. Shortly after that we ran into our first rooster. Deuce tracked it and turned it back at me. It flushed and my poor shooting continued. We went a little farther and once again a hen flushed. Just a few yards after that I flushed a rooster that was down wind of Deuce. I dropped this one with one shot and Deuce found it. It was a nice big rooster, mostly we have been seeing very young birds.
We walked a long ways after that bird until we saw another. While Deuce was cutting through some cattails I could hear a couple pheasants running ahead of him. It seems like every time I am prepared for these runners they end up being hens. That was the case once again, two hens.

Now we were getting to that magic time when walking heavy cover. Sundown was coming soon and roosters could be heard in the distance cackling. We topped a small knoll and once again we had a bird flush wild about 20 yards from Deuce. It was a cackling rooster laughing at our feeble attempt. Deuce didn't give up circling down wind of where that bird got up. Sure enough he snaps into a point. I walked towards the point and up flies a hen. Figures she would hold. We had one more hen get up in that area before we high tailed it to one last area that looked good.

As we came along side an overgrown pond Deuce is clearly tracking a running bird, yes running pheasants seems to be the rule this year. He is on it for over 50 yards when the trail turns to the right and then back at me. Tricky bird doesn't know he has a tracking fool on his heels. Deuce flashed a point then moves ahead and flashes into another point. I know the bird is close now and there is almost no chance it will hold for long. I take a few steps towards him only to have a rooster erupt out of the switchgrass in front of me. I miss the first easy shot but now it is straight away and drops at my second shot. I hear a splash as it hits in the pond. Deuce is on it right away and sort of makes his first water retrieve, almost making this waterfowl related. haha I check the time after I take the bird from him and it is 2 minutes until sunset. Good job pup, that's enough.

Great story, Tim and that photo is a magical touch to a wonderful ending. Well done. I think your pup knows how to sit for a picture. Good boy.
By the way, how long is your pheasant season?

Nice rendition of events! NOTHING better than hunting pheasants over a dog. Tim, do you think the higher percentage of running birds this year is a consequence of the harsh winter impacts on young birds and hatchlings from the previous winter? Are overall bird numbers down this year in SoDak?

Awesome Tim! Very nicely done!

Pretty pair of birds you have there.

Enjoyed the story Tim. We have been chasing ducks in ND for over a decade and only a little bit of upland. Wish I could take a couple of weeks up there so I could get a good dose of both.

Tim,
Ducks have been dismal this year and getting out of bed extra early with little chance of seeing any real numbers of birds has been hard so lately I have been using the same "reason" as you to go chase partridge (grouse). Dogs need exercise!

Al,
Thanks. He does sit well, I guess I can train a dog model if nothing else.
The season runs until Jan. 4th. Lots of fun yet to be had.

Mike,
We are learning each other and I think one day we will get this figured out.

Steve,
Ugly is only skin deep...I'm sure you've been told that before. :)

RL,
You are right, pheasant hunting changes behind a dog. It is so much fun watching for that moment the scent hits his nose.
I think the runners are partially a product of the winds we have been having. Pheasants get very spooky in the wind. There is also some corn in yet and they know if they run to that they are usually safe.
One of the birds yesterday was a year old bird, the other was this years. The older bird was the one that tried to double back towards me. Didn't work. :) It seems like the older birds usually run but the younger ones can too. They still might hold tight once they hit the edge of cover but they will run until then.

We lost a huge percentage of the birds in my corner of the state between the nasty 2009 winter and the drought ending in 2013. With a lot of CRP being turned into corn they just couldn't handle it all. This year they really rebounded well. Not huge numbers but much better then they were. Many of the birds look to be young. We had a 9" deluge of rain in early june right when they should have been hatching. I have seen some very very young birds that must have come from late renesting efforts.
Most of the traditional SD pheasant hotspots are better then they were last year.

Mike,
I wish I had taken that with my better camera but it didn't turn out half bad for a cell phone and the sun setting.

Dani,
Thanks, I have to keep up SD's reputation and not let everyone think WA is the only place with pheasants.

Dave,
See response to Steve, it fits. :)
Put me in the photo and he looks a lot better.

Hank,
You know the best part? In a day or two I'll have to burn more energy off of him...and the more I burn it off of him the more he needs to have even more burned off. This all works great until the season ends. haha

Vince,
Yep, the two of us are very connected and we will be eating well.

Brad,
Glad you enjoyed it. I know in some parts on ND there is some great upland hunting. I'd love to get into the grouse and huns up there.

Brandon,
The ducks have been mostly a no show around here too. Looks like we will go from early fall type temps this week to freezing up next week. I think the waterfowl will move through pretty fast. That's the good thing about upland hunting, they don't leave...and it can actually get better here the later it gets. As long as you don't mind the cold.

Its' a vicious circle :)

Ouchhh....

You do realize that was presented as a rousing chant.....like BAMA BAMA BAMA ?

Excuse me will I go retrieve a bag of frozen pea's for my squashed beans...

Steve

Tod,
Too bad you weren't able to come out west this year. It sounds like bird numbers are good in a lot of places.

Steve,
Hey I'm in Big Ten country, what do I know about a rousing chants...especially not "Bama, Bama, Bama..."

I need to make him a chin topee so he can at least look the part of an Ugly Dog. He's just too pretty, he is to dogs what Muhammad Ali was to boxers. :)
