Spring Turkey

I am thinking about buying some flextone turkey decoys because they are nice but a little cheaper and would fit my budget
Henrick,
There are times when a decoy is indispensable, especially field hunting. Add it to your bag of tricks. If nothing else, it's fun to watch a turkey beat the snot out of your decoy.

Ok I did see the metal mouth and that had good looks from people also, maybe I will pick one up at the end of the season if they have some clearance sales somewhere.

Nice, I am still waiting for mine lol. I went out Sunday heard some in the morning and then in the evening had 2 fly across the front of the truck on the gravel road. Saturday they were really loud in the morning until the rain start then nothing and that was a little after sunrise.

Been hard here in Ohio, lots of pressure and little access. SD was good to me though.
Kevin,
Beautiful bird! Heather and I are going back to the Black Hills over Memorial day week. We got very close several times but never connected. If you don't mind me asking, we're you in the praire units or Black Hills units?

Very Nice Bird Kevin. I am headed back out tomorrow morning to a couple openings because that's where they should be headed after this rain and wind tonight. Throw out some decoys and call for a bit, because I have to head out by 7:30. Hopefully tomorrow is the day!

This Morning I got closer but still ended up blowing it. I got out of the truck to a Tom gobbling at 200yds right before shooting time about 5:15 or so. I walked into the woods and setup near a wide tree in a clearing and got setup. I called a couple yelps and clucks and he gobbled back. Then II called a little more and he ended up gobbling again. He was about 75-100yds during this. I gave him an hour and he was totally quiet so I also ended up staying quiet. Then after I was just about to leave I decided to check the ravine and see if he walked down there or was waiting for me. I look up after I hear branches snapping and see a big Tom flying out of a tree at 45yds. I didn't shoot because I didn't have a clear shot and I also wanted to keep him around for this weekend and next week. He ended up flying out over the slough and to the other forest section across the marsh around 4-500yds away. So Thats how the morning went for me.

Henrick,
Wow, exciting morning! Hindsight is always 20/20 but I think you are being too hard on yourself. Consider this a learning experience. My guess is that the tom heard your calling and was waiting for the hen to walk under his tree, like nature intended. For that reason I don't like to call much until after fly down. Oh sure I may give a few subtle tree yelps just to let him know I am there but otherwise I wait until he is on the ground. Sounds to me like you are tightening the noose. Good job!

End of the season often provides fantastic hunting. The guys who haven’t struggled are tagged out and the frustrated hunters usually give up and go fishing. The hens are mostly bred and if you can find a Tom looking for that last minute girlfriend it usually doesn’t take long to get him within range. Also the trees have a full canopy so you can really get in close to them on the roost.
