Sucks when it's your dog's time to go

Well that sucked....it always sucks. Stacey left work early, she picked up me and Barkley... Then she took us to Frisbees where we got him a cup of vanilla ice cream with peanut butter topping. Brought him down to the boat launch at Batterson for him to see the ducks and geese....while I fed him his treat. He could only eat half....but when he got a whiff of those birds he got all excited. Then we ended up at the clinic way early and he laid down on the cool floor and mostly just napped. I sat on the floor petted him and comforted him through the entire procedure with Stacey L Parker there with us. I'm thinking hard and I don't think I've never NOT had a dog at home my entire adult life.... it's going to be weird.... Thank you Stacey L Parker

The above was my FB post after we got home..... Stacey put up a lot of pictures and some recent videos on her FB page....

12 years, 3 months.... he went downhill QUICK....

First time in my adult life (I'm 55 and I think I go back to year 1 here) that I have not had a dog in the house.... feels weird....

I think I will start roughing out a cedar black duck urn for him tomorrow.....

So sorry to hear, and yes. You are correct, it just sucks. Cherish the memories and time you shared here on earth, for that's what you have left.

An urn seems like a fine and fitting way to honor your friend and always keep him in your heart.

Jim,

I'm so sorry for your loss. No mater how many times you go through it, loosing your pup hurts like hell.

Scott

It's been 3 1/2 months since we had to put our yellow down. Our hunting companions are just that, companions. Losing them hurts. Sorry for your loss brother.

Sorry for the loss of your best friend. Remember them in your heart and smile about the good times you both enjoyed. My ol girl missy is 13 now so not much time left with her and not looking forward to the day when she passes. Sounds like you need a new partner so start lookin!

Jim, I lost my Buddy Boy Bryant last September. Reading your post, I was right back in that room with him. Now I'm sitting here, right where you are...again. I'm glad you got to have that day with him.

Time, my friend. It doesn't make it better, but it does make it less frequent.

All the best,
Frank

Thanks everyone for the condolences. Good to see your post Scott. Still in CT or did you flee to NH and retire? And yes Roy. If not for my Stacey's triple bypass surgery last fall, I'd probably have a half grown pup running around.... She was setting aside money for a special birthday present with 4 legs, a wet nose and a raspy tongue, when she had a back issue that required surgery...Pre-op exam and her new PCP says "when did you have your heart attack?" So there went everything.... I already have a lead on a litter that if it took would hit the ground in September to go home in November.... eek...three hours out, 4-5 hours back because the route takes us within minutes of my granddaughter.... so we will HAVE to stop.... puppy and a 3 year old.... yeah... will have to stop. Hope to see the breeder at a hunt test next month and hand him a deposit check if I like how the pedigrees and health clearances look. But he's a pro trainer who also breeds gunning Labs, so I'm confident everything will check out.

I think a lot of us here have gone though what you are. It's tough and hurts but is worth it in spite of the pain you go through when their lives come to an end. After you finish the urn and put some time between you and yesterday maybe you should look for a pup. I bet you will find that bond again.

Eric

Thanks Eric. No doubt. At 55 I think I still have 2-3 hunting dogs left in my life. I started a name list at least 2 years ago. Timing was just never right to add another dog... 2019 I will be out there with a young inexperienced dog. 2018, I have a couple of guys with dogs of varying degrees, mostly JH level.... or I go sit in a tree with pointy sticks or a muzzlestuffer....

Jim, Sorry for your loss.

Over the years all of my girls have made the last trip to the first place they retrieved their first duck and their ashes have been place, New Mexico & Saskatchewan.

Never easy, each time the vet was nice enough to come to the house to make it easier for me and my girls, Mindy, Shadow, Sadie. It still pains me when I think of their loss
but I pray that someday when my time arrives, I will meet them all at the Rainbow Bridge and once again take pleasure in having them by my side.

Jim, FIrst of all you have to know that you are in good company here. Anyone who has ever had to say good by to a four legged partner knows your pain. I am sorry for your loss. I have several guys waiting at the rainbow bridge who will welcome your buddy.

[size 4] Never gets any easier, Jim. As some others have said, I hope you'll start looking for a pup when some time has passed.

Jim

I'm so sorry, I feel your pain. I hope you can find happiness in the love your dog gave you and your family. God's always looking for a great hunting dog. Now! like all of us, who have lost our dogs . it time for your great dog to be at the right hand of the father. All I can really say is . Don't frown on the loss, But smile from all the happiness your wonderful dog gave you.
My best friend past years ago. So your dog will never be alone. good luck
