The flapper was a flappin' this morning!

Tod, that is a cool traditional black powder pump shotgun you have in your photo. ;) Also, I guess you don't have an issue with the Vortex thing (in states where it is legal) because it does not have the pole positioning problem.

This whole "traditional" ego thing drives me crazy and decoy carvers have become some of the worst. If you want to really be "traditional" then you would use the latest and greatest (best) hunting equipment you can. That is what they were doing in the 1800s and early 1900s. The market hunters, decoy makers, and classic sports of old had one goal - to kill as many ducks and geese as they could and anything that would help was used. If aluminum, plastic, foam, fiberglass,.... had been around and affordable they would have been all over it. Not because they thought it was "cool" but because it made it easier to kill ducks.

Now if you want to say that you want to be historical in the way you hunt then fine. But that modern pump shotgun, gortex, outboard, fiberglass on the boat, GPS, Tanglefree line,....... don't need to be on the hunt.

Scott,

Just to send you a reality check - that is a semi-auto shotgun in my avatar that you reference several times, not a pump. I would think anybody stepping into a shitfight would have their ducks in a row (especially in their introductory statement) and be able to accurately identify one of the most common waterfowling shotguns used today. But hey, who am I to judge.

Spinners alter and increase harvest in ways that I find unacceptable. Thay are also nasty.

T

Sorry I could not identify the semi-auto blackpowder gun in a 2" x 2" photo. I did not even know they made those. :)

Tod...or is it "Jack" now?......I'm sure he was "thrown off" in his ID of the gun by the VERY TRADITONAL MARKET HUNTERS MAGAZINE EXTENDER installed like the men of old so that they could kill more bird more quicker.....

That should be a nice swift kick to the already badly disturbed hornets nest.....

But hey, who am I to judge.
The other is that you chose to hammer a guy three birds short of a limit with "To my ear I hear that it is all about the bag in a minimum amount of time and effort..."

or spin the gortex we all like so much, or enjoy the 4 stroke engine, or the neoprene waders, or the GPS... The list goes on and I thank god I am not a "traditionalist" but I do enjoy hunting over my cork out of my wooden boat. ;-)

Okay there is still one excuse left, and my favorite, of the classic go-to excuses used to justify the use of a nasty spinner. Who can come up with it? I'll give a hint next time I log in.

T

Come on - no more excuses on why to use a spinner?!?!?! And no guesses as to my favorite excuse?!?!? I should have made it a quiz with a prize, so maybe someone could guess to try to win the prize if only to have something to sell in the classifieds... but I digress...

Anyway, my favorite excuse for using a spinner is that you have to use one to compete, I just love that one. Duck hunting the sport, all the competition, the winning. I love it!

You lost me on that one DJ, I was using irony.

Wow, the birds must not be flying or the seasons haven't started yet. My seaosn comes in three weeks and I don't care if I have to throw rocks at them (traditionalist? ) I just want to spend the mornings with my dog, my friends, my decoys, and the ducks. Derek, use whatever you can afford. I am not a spinning wing decoy man (although I have hunted over them) simply because they are more of a pain in the butt more than anything, heavy, bulky, battery needs charged. You are using the wind powered or eco-friendly deke which is only as good as the wind that spins it. I guess it's no different than having a quiver duck on the water or just shaking your leg to make the ripples....same....same. Good luck to ya. I'm not going to tie feathers and weeds to a log anytime soon. Dave

This page was founded by a group of traditionalists, spinning wing decoys are not traditional - as far as I'm concerned they are an abomination. You say if it is legal it is okay with you, that says a lot to me. To my ear I hear that it is all about the bag in a minimum amount of time and effort, that does not jive with many of us. Kill your ducks over an abomination and feel fine about it, just don't expect me to ra ra ra your effort.

Tod

it has to do with how we choose to kill our birds. You choose a method that many, including I, consider unethical and distasteful.
T

Corn in the water is how a lot of the old timers did it, does that make it "traditional" and less unethical and distasteful?

Using or not using a legal product and / or "traditional" tool does not make anyone a better or more ethical hunter. Hunt the way you like but don't judge someone for not living up to your "standard" as long as they are not breaking the rules.

I didnt see anyone bring up any excuses and why should friends have to defend themselves among friends anyways?

You were rippin' Derek for his chosen technique...wanna rip on me for the plastic boat and paper mache decoys?

(I did replace the boat with a "traditional" 1947 AeroCraft double ender)

What was it Travis used to say here way back when in cases like this?

"Maybe you should go take a poop!"

I think the plastic boat and paper mache has been pretty well covered.

As far as the taking a poop, I'm glad I to have an opinion about things. I'm sorry that so many of you don't.

As far as not judging others, when did this forum turn into Sesame Street? You are judged every time you post a word and so am I.

You know the old saying. Opinions are like a$$#*@!&. Everyone has one, and they all stink!

Don't be afraid to give your own opinion, but don't be surprised when someone steps up and tells you to go pound sand. And, I've been told to go pound sand on more than one occasion.

That's just my opinion.

Derek -
Thanks for taking the time to post your hunt. I always appreciate reading about others hunters' experiences - particularly in interesting or extreme weather. And it is good to get an update on you and your dog, since you are a semi/demi/quasi-regular poster.
I'm also gratified that there was a vocal majority out in your support after Mr. Osier's recreational (one would hope) s***-stirring. I'm sure that it is all for fun in the sandbox, but I would hate for guys like yourself to hesitate over posting 'cause-it-just-ain't-worth-it...
Good luck for the rest of the season,
Dano

I've really enjoyed this thread the last couple of days. We need something like this to keep the blood boiling while not hunting.

Anyway, I thought I could add a few thoughts on why I've converted to a tepid support of spinners:

1. They help me spot other hunters. It's the next best thing to blaze orange. Especially in the areas I hunt with a lot of tall wild rice cover, I can stand up in my boat and scope out a big area with binoculars and see where the other hunters are set up. It saves me having to cover a lot of water, especially when coming out for an afternoon hunt. The more hunters that use them, the better.

2. I've started using one on weekends, mostly to deter other hunters out of my area. I set one up up on a high pole near the boat, and I turn it on when other hunters start coming in my direction, then I turn it off again so as not to scare the ducks. It seems to me that other hunters will set up nearer to you if you have just decoys than they will if you have decoys and a spinner. That's probably because they see you from farther away and so they don't come as close to begin with.

3. In an area with lots of other hunters, all of whom are using spinners, it's an advantage to be set up in a remote corner with just a few decoys and nothing else. After the first few weeks of the season, when all the ducks have been shot at over spinners, I want other hunters to use them so my spinnerless spread has an advantage. I'll see occasional hens and juvy drakes come on a bee-line for a spinner, but the big flocks seem definitely to prefer a good decoy spread without any wings on poles.

4. They've never seemed to me to be "nasty," just not terribly effective. Now, a semi-auto, that's nasty!

They are funny things to use. The blind conversation goes something like this:

Birds decoy in - "That spinner is working great, should we put out a second!!"

A little bit later

Birds bug out - "The spinner is the problem, pull it!!"

Tod, you are correct, we are judged by what we type. But if you are willing to dish out the judgment in type you need to be willing to take it when it gets turned around. Not just say everyone is babyish because they don't agree with you.

Tod didnt your mama teach you ""If you don't have nothing nice to say then DON"T SAY IT"
You love to bust balls but what I'm reading is you can't take it very well...

Best thing about this post is nobody responded to Steve hahahahaa Steve have fun playing with the bees by yourself!! hahahaha

Since employing the occassional use of a spinner my total bag has decreased so I find your claim to be with out merit.

What about the nasty part, can you refute that?

You are right Ed, the comments that you are referring to cut me to the quick. In fact to compensate, I spent the past 2 hours alternating between beating the hell out of the dog and sobbing in the fetal position (actually, I was sitting in a tree and saw 3 doe and a very nice buck, that if it had gone slightly different would be now hanging - big downside is I washed my boots earlier today and put them on the boot dryer and forget to plug it in so my boots are wet, so I had to wear a pair of old rubber boots that make my feet hurt - at least my underwear wasn't riding up).

T Tod, lol, Good luck with the deer, but leave the dog alone. You know what I'm saying to you. Posting up just to be a ship stirrer is not what we come here for is it? You seem to post up a lot of Nasty's as I will call them. You ever sell that pop up camper that you posted a while back?
