This Season's Project.. 1928 Benjamin Hallock Gunning Scooter

Good morning, Anthony~

Neat idea of running the oar holder down through the deck - so you still get the benefit of securing it to the transom. Clever Fellows down there along Great South Bay!

All the best,

SJS

All I can say is wow! All those picture of those historic boats and the work you guys do to them is fascinating. I don't see many boats like that here on the west coast, at least not here in Northern CA. I'd love to inherit a project like that.

The final stages... custom cockpit canvas cover installed today along with a few various hardware cleanups, she's looking fantastic and almost ready for the water this week! Here's a few progress photos hope to have grassed up & ready for the 96th season! Photos here include the removable bow decoy rack and setup as it would be this season..

Beautiful boat and a great job on the resto! Killer!

Anthony~

Great job all around! So nice to see that the Amityville Small Craft Rehabilitation Center (aka Babich Boatworks?) is offering its own "spa treatments" these days.

I like what you have done with the stool rack. Although the version you based it on made sense with the large round cutouts - to save weight and let overtopping seas out quickly - the aero/space age look never quite fit with the era.

All the best,

SJS

Anthony - beautiful boat. You did a great job restoring it. I like how you didn't treat some parts with paint - it creates a touch of 'new and old' to the character. I would love to see some photos of it on the water this fall.

What is going on in the first two images - specifically what are the black cylinders? Pardon my ignorance - I've not done much canvas work.

Best regards,

Bryce

Yes! Starting a trend another one for the fleet!

Hey Bryce,
So those are pin holder caps for the install of the snaps. When the canvas is measured it’s stretched out to the desired fitting then pin snaps are applied within the mounted snaps affixed to the wood. The canvas then gets punctured through those pins where the black caps get put over to eliminate the canvas from coming off. The pin holes identify where the compression fitting buttons go for final install

That's very interesting - I've learned something new. Thanks!

After much hard work and late evenings, she was able to finally touch the water of The Great South Bay yesterday. I have to say I'm very impressed how the boat floats, handles and maneuvers with the 2.5hp. Towing the vessel is also working out well with the added weight of the engine at the stern.
Excited to use her this season and will continue to update the thread on her new chance at life! Here's a few images of yesterday's fun along with breaking in the "new-to me" 1969 Browning A-5 which paired up with the boat rather nicely..next up time to cover her in Salt-Hay.
Best of luck this season all we kick off on Saturday 11/22

Hey fellas,
Yesterday afternoon buddy and I ventured out to harvest some fresh salt-hay to cover up this beauty.. here's a few photos of how she looks now. The boat has been loaded up with her current gunning rig 6 Al McCormick cork black duck and hopes to once again see some falling flights this coming Saturday! Will keep you all posted on the journey...here's a project video: 1928 Hallock Restoration VIDEO

Bryce- Yes I use a 12" tiller extension on this boat but primarily will be shoving it with the 14' Ashwood Shovin' Stick

Roy- Exactly that! Was a transformation for sure...

@Steve Sanford the force is strong in this one.

Anthony, such nice work and the video, as always, is a pleasure to watch. I got a note on IG after I reposted you story telling me what an awesome boat that is. I made sure to let them know it was your work and not mine!
