Traditonal archers - anyone make their own bow?

Chuck,
your headed down a rabbit hole for sure. Ive got a cedar stave that I cut on a job and have my eye out for Osage all the time.
As mentioned above Clay Hayse is really a legit guy and shows the ins and outs of doing it yourself. (I believe he left FL fish and game to do his Youtube channel) There are books also.
I am using a Tolke Whip right now(Laminated R/D long bow) but have been trough the ILF riser with R/D longbow limbs and China made Black Duck R/D longbows of different weights along the path.
Single string is a whole nother animal from the compound. For me that is what makes it interesting. (Many of my friends say its nuts when I eat a tag from refusing to use an XBow we are allowed).
"The Witchery of Archery" is a powerful force. And a very relaxing way to end a long day in the back yard after work.
I think you will have a successful build if you take your time. And if you want to get a leg up on the shooting part the Black Duck/Hunter LB is cheap enough to get you going in the mean time. (less than 30lbs is plenty for target and form development)
Tuning an arrow to the single string is not hard but some shops are not up on it. Bare shaft after you get consistent with your anchor point and release.
For your form a book called "Shooting the Stickbow, a Practical Approach to Classic Archery" may be helpful to you.
Enjoy the build and all the time on the target working on perfecting the shot.

Chuck I would agree that you are heading down a rabbit hole. I have made a few Tri-lams and have some Yew staves drying that I plan on making a longbow or 2 from. It is a lot of fun. make sure to take your time during tillering and don't rush it. You will most likely break a few in the process... a good resource is the Bowyers Bench on Trad Gang.com . https://www.tradgang.com/tgsmf/index.php?board=68.0 there is a sticky on the top of the forum for all of the vocabulary and will cover a bunch of the acronyms that you will come accross. It is pretty rewarding to shoot a bow that you made especially if you make your own arrow shafts and fletch them with goose or turkey feathers from birds you shot!

First bunch of books arrived...should keep my mind busy a while

I'm off work next week, that should give me a good start after I finish the book I'm in the midst of already

Been itching to try making a longbow. Anyone make their own bow? Did some searching, did some Googling...watched a lot of YouTube...but always better to get opinions of peopel more trustworthy than someone looking for hits on their YouTube channel. Got my eye on a couple books too.

Ian feir Who was a long time member here, makes his own bows.

I’m not sure if he still comes around here but he is on Facebook and Instagram and I see his builds from time to time they were very nice.

Chuck, I believe Pete McMiller made some of his own bows. Might try to contact him.
