What a pussy....

but I just know that 4 or 5 of the 17 ducks in the state will be flying today... :)

That is sorta what I tell myself when I go out looking for quail and woodcock here in FL.....I just know that EVENTUALLY I will stumble over one of the five quail left in the state

(most years I see more woodcock in FL than I do quail)

Tod,
One would assume you know yourself best so far be it for me to tell you otherwise.
I broke thru 3 inch thick ice at the ramp yesterday. Will go back today and clear a wider area so I can launch Friday morning if there is not a lot of ice coming from upstream. Most of the decoys will be either on the frozen sandbar or just along the edge. Hopefully that a few geese will drop in. ( I'll be taking my heater along. )

Not sure everyone will agree with me but I have always felt the wind to be colder when it blows over large saltwater rather that inland freshwater. Probably in my head but it always feels that way. The one condition I have grown to refuse hunting in is 35 degrees and a steady rain. NO THANK YOU!

I have no experience with fresh water but since salt water freezes at a lower temp than fresh, it stands to reason that it would indeed feel colder because it is.

I'd be on the water now if I had the balmy 40/20 temps you have today and the rest of the week! :).

I would make fun of you but...well...I know the feeling.
I hate being too uncomfortable when I'm hunting. That usually means wind here. I can pheasant hunt in single digits as long as its calm and sunny. Get below 35 with any amount of wind and I'm staying home. It sucks getting older. Not sure if I'm getting smarter or softer.

Like Old Fogey Dave I almost always sit inside a shack when ice fishing anymore. Sad...really sad.

Tim

Guyes, I agree as we now have reached are high 70, we have gotten a lot smarter about certain hunting conditions,Rain Or below 20 is out for me.

I don't blame you a bit. I personally get a kind of perverse satisfaction from getting out in the more difficult conditions. I was out this morning. It held steady at 12 degrees with a stiff wind. Birds died. It would have been a fun hunt even if the birds chose not to cooperate.

I do wish I could splurge for some of the nicer Sitka outerwear. Oh well, for now layers upon layers of inexpensive gear will suffice.

Eric,
I prefer to think of it as being Iowa tough. Course I'm sitting in a tent on the ice fishing for crappies right now. Have a heater available but it's not running. Chipped all the ice at the ramp with my chisel, my handy Spud bar

And it is 37 degrees.

That is what I'm talking about. Teen or single digit temps, sea smoke, birds moving well, no one else out... The conditions were a big part of it that I enjoyed.

Tod,
Don't be too hard on yourself. The real cold temps and a good wind does sap the enthusiasm, but for the most part I can tolerate the cold, but not rain. I really dislike hunting in the rain, especially a cold rain. We are out yesterday breaking ice to get to open water and by the time we had the decoys out I was working up a sweat. Tomorrow the ice should be thick enough to walk on making things somewhat easier. The early morning looks to be about 12 degrees, but not much wind. I only have two more days left to hunt so will be out there with plenty of hand warmers and hot chocolate.

It could be 77 if I had the heater going. [whistle] Iowa tough!!

Don't leave the tent - might get a sunburn!

Well good luck tomorrow!!!!

Cold never used to bother my hands, but these days it kills them if I get a real cold breeze on them. Getting old, I guess. Easier to keep them dry and warmish deer hunting.

Hopefully is a few more years you'll get phone calls from Gus like I do Thomas. "Dad, we found them and are on our way to limiting. You need to get down here now!"

Your time is coming, and it is AWESOME.

That would be pretty awesome. Sharing all the days this year was pretty great.

I did the same thing today. Was supposed to go with Sean Sutton, but we'll just go tomorrow when it will be mid 30's instead of 20's. I am a pussy too. No more 20 degree hunting on the water for me. Maybe we'll have some new ducks. The good news is, with the colder temps, they have to feed more. So I'm hoping to see some birds, maybe even take a shot!
