What is in your bag? December 2020

Zach, Your in progress decoys look great! It will tickle Debby too to see that one of Steve's birds is out there floating in WA.

An interesting aside about Steve's decoys...Debby met a guy at a big yard sale where she was selling a bunch of Steve's stuff (still no decoys going up for sale) and a dude named Rich came by. He ended up coming by her house to buy all the field decoys because he has a property in AR where he also hunts so he could actually use them (highly doubt most FL people could). Well, he got to looking around at all the carved birds and picked one up and turned it over and he was like OH YOU HAVE A SUTTON BIRD TOO!!!! How cool! I found one floating away some years ago and never could figure out who makes Sutton birds.

Debby was a bit confused and taken aback a bit....she was like uuuhhhh yeah. Steve carved that one and all the others that say Sutton. It clicked in the guys brain and he went even further in awe. Obviously some of the birds aren't Steve's and Rich had a hard time believing that we would hunt Steve's birds much less Jason Russel birds or Bob Furia or Bill Kell or Grayson Chesser or Alan Eastman or....or....or.....Rich said that Steve's bird sits on display because it is so nice but that he might take it down to get it wet again. Debby said that he ought to. Rich was just blown away by what kinds of decoys could be had other than plastic.

She called me up excited that that bird might get floated again, so I know it'll tickle her that this bird was floated again....

Dani, I think there is likely a few of us who would love to add one of Steve's birds to our rig to be hunted again and again. I reached out to Nancy, Jon Yenulonis's widow and asked that she to keep me in mind when the family had gone through everything, I would love to buy a bird or a pair that Jon has made to my rig. Still hoping I hear from her some day. I will give my family specific instructions!

Not looking for a gift, just a token to keep them in mind often.

Brad, is that a hen redhead on the left next to the hen buffie? I seldom saw enoght scaup to worry about exceeding two birds per outing per hunter.

Rick, its a wigeon, 4 greaters, 9 wigeon and a hen buffy in that photo. Dang, you have good eyes, I usually don't shoot buffleheads but I am training a 6 month old lab. Add they are perfect for training.

Not so much whats in the bag, but more of a celebration of Skye's career as a duck dog. She retires at the end of this season. She has some quality of life health issues and at 10, she has earned it. Each hunt is bitter sweet.

What a great hunting partner. Sometimes I wonder who is having more fun.
I also wish Skye a healthy retirement
