What?s in your bag? November 2020

Still fairly slow in our spots but we're trying new things with the new-to-us boat.

After many days of whiffing shots or not seeing much, Andrea has finally started to get some real action and actually hit them. She's hooked now! Of course it's hard to sneak out of the house on my own now.

Looks like she'll be mounting her first pair ducks: these two buffies.

Joe & Richard~

Happy Thanksgiving!

But, no, that "staub/marsh spike/bog stake" was not made by me. I have one very similar in my shop made by John Sheaff - former SSWA President and Baldwin resident.

The first pair I made was from Oak - perhaps 3/4" x 2" x 24". Each was flat in section with a tapered lower end. They were OK until the late season when the bogs froze. I later switched to steel rod. (My current pair is tucked away in my Sneakbox - too much work to dig them out today for a photo.) I especially like them because they are heavily galvanized and they have an eye molded into the end. The bottom is cut at an angle - from the long rods used to secure guy wires on utility poles. I can stab them into frozen saltmarsh easily.

As you can see, I eye-splice the end onto the staub and do not use any hardware on the boat end - just a back splice. I adjust the length on the boat end as the tide moves.

It is handy to have a pair - but I normally used just one, with the boat snugged alongside the bog.

All the best,

SJS

I have the good fortune to have a pair The workmanship is Sanford quality but I assume that these were from John Sheaf as this was I am informed the Freddy Weirst boat

Andrea does look hooked! Buffies are great fun and practice, not too bad to eat either. Wait until she sees a flock of brant flying on the deck, singing their glorious song with locked wings landing in your spread. Now if that doesn't get your heart beating, nothing will.
Looks like you guys had a great day

Good morning, Joe~

Congratulations on that Hoodie! And, I hope the vessel is meeting your expectations.

My shooting is slowly progressing - the pumping action is coming back for those second and third shots.

No Drakes for me so far - but these Hens have their own beauty.

Gorgeous from one end to the other.

One of the Woodlies - and this Drake Mallard - were nice long "Model 12" (which is choked FULL) shots.

The Hen was especially pale all over. Note how she has almost no saddle on her bill.

All the best,

Rick~

I think she was just toward the pale end of the normal spectrum of plumages. No errant white feathers that might cause me to suspect Pekin or Call Duck.

All the best,

SJS

No photos.

The deer hunting greatly improved after the first couple days. To the point of being a Banner year for our group. Acorn fed good protein, and plenty of season left.

The moon last evening was spectacular, while I took my time draggin' Geezer style, down hill...

Puts life in proper perspective. Thanksgiving is everyday for folks like us.

Second split of duck season opened Nov. 28. Very little to report in that area, but I'm a lookin'.

At present I'm still in deer huntin' mode, (and checkin' for squirrels). Gotta hunt what there is, not what there isn't.

6wt. fly rod is still ready to go at the drop of a hat.

Life is good Thank God.

Zane, nice hunt!

Here are two hunts from the holiday weekend. Nice to spend some time with my old man. While we talk hunting everyday during the season and often hunt the same areas on the same day he hunts usually with his long time gunning partner and I hunt with my brother. My brother had family obligations so my old man opted to hunt two days in a row with me. Two fine hunts considering the weather and volume of birds in the area

Geeze Will...looks like you are having one heck of a good season. Keep the pictures coming.

Can?t tell you how incredibly fortunate I feel to be able to string together so many good hunts already this year.

Anthony, love the aqua pod. I use mine all the time

Will, do you use it with the layout blind? I used it on opening day (after around 10 yrs of not having used it) and whoo boy, is there little space to move around/snug fit... I have the 10 footer

I also have the 10 footer. When I first got it I used it as a layout and still do occasionally. Typically though it?s just transportation. Just love the stability and ability to carry all the stuff I need
