I dunno.

Could be just me, but I could imagine the potential for problems with a steel spike, if the decoy is used for hunting. Dogs, people, waders, entanglements, etc. Contest decoy maybe.

Have some rusty hay rakes used for curlew bills. Shelf riders, not hunted over or seldom messed with.

A pitchfork was used in a murder up here some years ago, don't just happen in the movies. Gives me the willies.


I gotta admit, the decoy does look good. [cool]

Funny, I hadn't considered any of that (especially murder....jeeze!) but upon seeing the decoy you're the second person to relay those thoughts. I guess this will also be the first decoy I've made that will require my lawyer to pen up a disclaimer, and I'll hold up production on my merganser rig with actual keyhole saws for bills......

That's a mighty fine work bench. No doubt after your restoration it will be of museum quality, and good for at least another 100 years.

Gawd how I love old woodworking tools, and benches. If I were a younger man, it would be just right for my small shop.

Hope it finds a good home, is well cared for and used as intended.

Your idea for merganser bills will work, just watch how ya pickem up. [;)]


I carved a large Northern Pike some years ago. Was going to use a old bandsaw blade for the teeth, then decided not to do it.

So we do get some good creative ideas that sure look good, but "Look And Do Not Touch". Which just makes folks wanna touch all the more.

Keep up the good work.
 
I've used that too. As well as thick leather, zip ties, various hardwoods, cutouts from soda bottles with felt epoxied on them...probably a half dozen other things I'm not remembering.

So the pitch fork was just a natural progression of artistic creativity. Makes sense.

Good job on the RB Fishducks, and the Brown Trout.


Here abouts the Common Fishduck, is the scourge of all trout streams and take a terrible toll on trout. Ever since the Feds included Mergansers in the regular duck bag it has been bad news for trout. Time was when they had there own bag limit, some gunners specialized in hunting them. Jim Schmiedlin loved gunning Fishducks, and made some mighty fine decoys to gettem to toll.

Vinc;e, the sawbills are not counted as part of the fowl limit here. I think the idiots in ertain states did that1 Why? I guess they never ate one!
 
Can the states set a limit that is outside of what the Feds say?

In FL, mergansers are separate from ducks and geese. I guess if the states say mergansers are part of the duck limit that is more restrictive than the Feds rules, so it is okay?

I had never heard that mergansers were included in the duck limit anywhere. Learn something new....

Eat fish they be doing fine at it .I dont eat Fishducks and belive that killing them for being fishducks is questionable morally if ya dont eat what you kill.Some claim they make delicious sausage with Merganser
Ive never tasted it but im sure its well seasoned to kill the shitty taste af a fishduck. Brown trout are not a native species to the contenant of North America but a 19th century transplant from Britain like the starlings .I do enjoy watching Mergansers feed and be mergansers.
Their antics during the breeding season is a delight to see.
I give the mergansers a pass id rather they eat trout than I eat them.
 
I cut black plastic one gallon plant buckets into strips for Old Squaw tails. Durable plus quick to add to decoys. I pick them up from the bay by the tail.
 
I believe one of the reasons for including mergansers in the regular bag limit was because many guys can't lay off shooting them...they hunt more to pull the trigger than anything. So if they shoot more mergansers, they shoot less of species of greater concern, like scaup, redheads, cans etc.

I'm not sure where I heard that, so it might be total BS....
 
Dani- CT is one such state. Mergs in the regular duck bag.

Interesting Bill, no one I hunt with shoots mergs except for me, and even that is rare. However with sea ducks I've heard people like to give them away.

Curious if the Atlantic flyway commission will extinguish the separate sea duck bag this year. I haven't seen any updates from the December meeting

Indiana and Michigan both have separate limits for Mergansers. A limit of 5 but only 2 can be hooded. We are seeing more hoodie flocks here on the border.
