What's on your Work Bench ? DECEMBER 2018

Good morning, RF~

Beautiful tribute all around!

Only one "criticism": That's no "sketch" - that's a drawing. (and a fine one at that!)

All the best,

Thanks for the correction. A friend did it from a photo so honestly I wasn?t sure. I appreciate the education.
After 65 years never too old to learn. Keeps us going.
Merry Christmas everyone.

Dave; I love the stout tails on those Gads.
Steve; I built a similar gate at the top of my stairs by the kitchen, huge help to corral the lads.

HI Steve,

Thanks! Actually my Dad's design patterned off of his grandfather's sneakboxes. I have been very fortunate to learn decoy carving from my Dad.

Regards,
Bob

That boat is awesome. I?ve often thought of trying to build one out of balsa.
Thanks Darin! Never tried much carving with balsa but a solid hull should definitely be fine. Sneakboxes are a little carving and a little model building with some miniature decoys thrown into the mix. Have to have decoys!

I finally found time for the 6 Cabela's Mallard/Blackduck I got of Captain John Stieben via Ebay. Bodies are in "Body Black" from Lock Stock and Barrel. Reinforcing board keels all. I redid 4 of the original heads and added 4 of mine to the others. I started out with 6 but added in 2 that I had. Damned if I can tell which was which now. Will finish up the heads and gun with these later this week.

Want to thank Steve Sanford for turning me on to Lock Stock and Barrel paint. Good stuff, right consistency, really flat finish and the folks there are a pleasure to deal with.

Before photo --- all the asses were broken off from the weak keels that they had.

Ready for finish

Good morning, Joe~

Nice rehab! Always a great thing to put old gunners back into fighting trim. I hope you a get some live Black Ducks to join them soon.

I've have had little time for carving this month - lots of time with family and another South Bay duckboat has been in my shop taking my time and attention (I'll be posting in a week or so). But, I did need to "drop everything" and get this Screech Owl done for Christmas. It's #4 in a series for a friend's grandkids. (#5 will be 2019 - not sure which species yet.)

These are all "half-size flyers". At 9 inches LOA, the earlier species - Great Horned, Barred, Short-eared - were significantly smaller than life-size. This little bird is just a bit smaller than the real thing.

By coincidence, a bunch of us watched a Screech Owl fly over our rig at first light earlier this season. I had never seen one up in the air before. It looked like an enormous moth - broad wings and tail but no bill or head.

The bird is Basswood finished in acrylics. A brass rod connects it to its Western Red Cedar base - finished with varnish.
