What's on your WORK BENCH ? - January 2020

Good morning, All~


As usual, my bench is filled with a variety of projects - decoys, carvings, boat stuff - and some work for the house. I am just wrapping up a pair of flying Owls. They are the last (?) in a series of gifts for a customer's grandchildren. Both the Snowy and Screech are done - and I hope to finish the bases this morning. I've been having some challenges with the varnish on the Red Cedar bases.



The Owls are Basswood finished in acrylic latex (my usual Behr gunner paints). I call them "half-size" - but all species have been about the same - about 9 inches LOA. So, the Screech is just about life-size while the Snowy is perhaps 1/3 scale.

Nice bird!


Here's a restoration of a bird I carved in the early 80s. It was a gift for my wife - carved from Butternut I got from her Uncle Charles. I had been given a batch of nice 3x8s. I gave them a few years later to another biologist - who planned to use them for traditional furniture. Of course, I had no idea then that the species' future was headed for a steep to decline - and so I wish I had kept at least a board or two. Butternut is a wonderful carving wood.



I re-fastened the head, added eyes, and re-finished it with Tung Oil. I had previously only had a few coats of Minwax furntiure wax. He now rests comfortably on our living room floor.

That is what I call a very productive workbench, and can relate to.

I am somewhat disturbed by the that organizational set of drawers behind the Canada goose...[;)]

Good morning, All~


I finally finished up the 7 Joe Pendergast birds I began months ago - they will get delivered on Long Island on Wednesday.


Here are the 5 Blacks. These are the birds whose bodies had been painted - and that I burned and then rubbed with Linseed Oil.

Joe is well-known for his many creative head postures. When I have the time, I will post a longer feature about Joe and these neat decoys.


These 7 birds appear to be a mix of vintages - lots of differences in the details of both heads and bodies. I picked the two earliest (?) to make into Mallards. Their heads are a bit undersized and I moved the eyes aft on both.

These Canadas are still in process (obviously?). I think all are 2 different vintages/makers of Beans Coastals

Love the way those teal look Pat! the feather stamping makes them look so more detailed and delicate to the other GWT I have from you!
