We have some good temps that will lock up the small water this week. We have not had that the past year or two when I could hunt it. Will probably be 40F in January, but I'll take a week in the 20s at night for both deer and ducks.

Winter begins for real Dec. 21st. So it's late Fall here in western NY. HHHEEeeeeHHHEeeeeeHHHHEeeeee

I'm hunting for deer especially now that we have some Snow (feet of it not inches in some areas). Duck season comes back in Dec. 7th. By then most still water might be locked in ice if the cold weather continues. Have to take it day by day, await a thaw. Some kind of hunting season is in here until end of Feb. and I'll hunt until then God Willing.

With the snow cover the light is very good for painting and the day time is bright. Hunt some, paint some, carve some and mabbe fly fish local trout streams. Each day decisions are made cuz no time to waste. Life is Good.

Can barely get out the back door with all the snow. I live outside of Erie Pa., in Girard. 29" of the stuff fell in 12 hours on Thanksgiving. A slight break yesterday afternoon, and now it's back this morning. I'm guessing at least 3 feet on the ground now and they predict another 10-20" today. No let up in sight until at least Tuesday. I bet that not one person in Erie County made it out for Saturdays deer season opener.

It was 16 degrees this morning. ill do a little scouting this afternoon with my fly rod in hand. Last week we never saw a single duck, but it's much colder now. I'll wait till the afternoon to fly fish and above 40 so the line guides don't ice up. There will be ice on the back eddies on our little stream, but trout should be in their by the hundreds by now. We are taking my 9 year old grandson for another lesson in fly fishing. I've not seen a single duck since season began a month and a half ago. I'm just waiting for the goldeneye to arrive.

My wife Heather and I just returned last night to Minnesota after our Oregon elk hunt (no elk) and have one month of pheasant hunting remaining. We hunted right up to New Years Eve last year. Hope to do the same this year. Bitter cold conditions here for so early in the winter.

Congrats on the band! If you don’t mind me asking where was the band from? My buddy shot one banded in Quebec last year here on Long Island during our first split.
Banded first week of January, 2015 near Atlantic City, NJ so a wintering grounds band. My last banded black was a 12 year old bird from Ontario

Should have duck hunted today, things were pretty froze up. Went to the deer woods instead and had a real slow morning. I'll choose better tomorrow.

And since this is a duckboat page, playing with my 360 camera running the south jersey marshes.View attachment 61601
Cool picture
I miss your videos, because your marshes are similar or remind me the marshes I hunt here in CT. I totally understand about giving away your spots, I get it! I hate when people post about spots that I hunt, only takes a few extra hunters to over pressure some small areas where I hunt.

3 hunts into our season and not a shot fired and now froze over. However nice warmup starting this weekend should help unlock my most of my water by midweek next week.

It’s 15 degrees here this morning and everything has a skim of ice. I’m going on a recon mission later to see if there’s any ducks around. I did see a few woodies a couple of weeks ago while deer hunting.
