I have "only" the A-5 Magnum that is my go to duck gun. I hate to see how the salt is hurting her, but she is past the point where I won't eventually have her refinished, and maybe coated in some fashion.... not traditional, but she is my work horse and already sports a composite stock....

Then in today's mail is the Cabela's flyer.... the A300 in camo on sale for $750, and $650 for club members.... I have close to $300 in gift cards and points, so I could have a new A300 Ultima for about $400 out of pocket....

Having a spare duck gun for guests, and for the salt is looking rather tempting. Anyone out there want to dissuade me?

Just would propose a remington versamax instead is all..... lol. Cant beat the technology the marines have been using for the last 20 years or longer.

A300 are supposed to be pretty superb shotguns though.

I have an older A391 which is a target model I use for trap, but I believe it is the same action today. If so, it is nice shotgun and is reliable. I bought it about a year ago and really like it. It was in mint shape and I couldn't say no. It is easy to disassemble and clean and being a gas gun shoots a little softer than my Benelli Vinci, which is my duck gun. It will shoot quite a bit softer than your A-5, one of which I also shot for about 20 years.

There's just no way you can justify passing up such a great deal! Especially for a salt gun.

Another Versamax gunner. I never hear anyone mention this gunning piece. I love mine but sometimes go back to the fixed choke Remington 1100 3 inch magnum. It was manufactured in November of 1968 and gifted to me some years ago.

When that M4 patent ran out, Remington made the wisest decision ever to copycat the internals. I was working in the gun industry when the versamax came on scene. I kept hearing the rumors from many reps before its release. When I finally got my hands on one, I didn't listen to any of the reps when they were in gauking all over it in our meeting. I walked right out to the sales floor, pulled an M4 from the wall, walked back in the office where they were showing it off and stripped both down side by side. It was the exact same as the benelli M4, just one had a longer barrel and was set up for wing shooting and the other was set up for close range combat purposes. The rep asked if I didnt believe him, told him I live by a golden rule.... Believe half of what you hear and only what you see. He giggled but I knew then I needed at least one. Its been the most reliable semi-auto I have ever had in the field. I even had an SBE2 that literally saw thousands upon thousands of rounds, to the point it finally fell apart and I would put my versamax above the benelli. Still want a vinci one day and kick myself for never getting one, but at some point it will present itself.

The only thing I really dont like about the versamax is the front forend. Its bulky and wide and can feel cumbersome. I do like the slimmed down forends of other shotguns. There was a company called tooth and nail armory who made a slimmed down version, I had it FOREVER and loved it. Freak accident and I dropped it cleaning one day and it cracked. Never been able to find a replacement like it. I would think with all the 3D printing today, i could find someone to make one. Just never really looked that hard.

Nothing wrong with beretta though, they are great guns. Everyone I know that has one, loves them.

Just beware you,ll not get the drop at comb with a A300 that you get with your humpback A5. May or may not matter to you but will effect the way you shoot it. The A300 platform is good, i,ve got one in 20 gauge, that shoots great for me now after buttstock mods to get D.A.C.

Dave,
Sorry to hear your gun is rusting. Since this is your favorite and you shoot it well, why not ship it to Rob Roberts and have him coat it. I saw his work at the Pheasants Forever convention in Kansas City and it looks fantastic. Equal or better than factory coatings plus price wise you are practically there. RM

I appreciate the recommendation, as I will at some point bite the bullet and get her coated, but having a spare duck gun in the safe is rather tempting too. I will swing by Cabela's tomorrow to shoulder one and then see if I want to get up to be in line at 5am on Friday!

I second the cerakote job. That is one thing I seem to fight on all my barrels of shotguns. Receivers, never an issue, just the barrels. I dont like camo guns, so they all start black for me. I end up always getting them cerakoted it seems. Did both my remingtons black but went with a brown on my over under. I dig cerakote A LOT! No rust issues what so ever after cerakoting my barrels.

I don't think you will regret the A300. Keep in mind at that price if you sell it you will not take a big loss.
You may find you have a new favorite gun.
