Whatcha Listening To?

I've been on a Talking Heads binge. We had a summer intern at work, and she and I had to share a long ride to a field work site. I told her I'd drive and she could play whatever music she liked. First up was Stop Making Sense--the entire album. Been looking up old favorites from that album ever since.

And the movie is out on HBO right now
 
It's been a long summer. Watching friends go through difficult times makes one very aware of those who you can count on. I'm happy to have a few. I hope I am one of those to these friends.
Maybe I've posted this song before, if I have I apologize, but it captures the mood well.

Don't stop there. Blondie, and the Ramones and ya got the CBGB's trifecta. To have lived during those times was one helluva experience and oh my the memories. Some of which are clearer than others...
 
Any Better Than Ezra fans? The song was inspired by the true story of Gram Parson's body being stolen by his friend and disposed of per Gram's wishes. A movie was made about it called Grand Theft Parsons starring Johnny Knoxville. To anyone that lost a good friend or family member in their teens or 20s this song is a real tear jerker.

If you like heavy blues inspired Rock with a psychadelic twist. You will enjoy it. I think it is my favorite act these days. They are from scandanavia and recorded this session in an old Communications station from the early cold war era out in the wilderness. They have a previous version of the album that gives a rundown of their entire recording session with a history of all of the instruments and equipment and the interesting location they recorded at. Really interesting videos and music too.

When I was in high I didn't know a single person that was into April Wine. Sure, some knew "Just Between You and Me" but that was about it. I ate them up and to this day I still place them in the mix of the biggest rock bands of the 70s and 80s. When you go back and look over their music they really were a force in the industry. This song was by Elton John but I thought they did it better and I'm in the minority that Elton John did Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds better than the Beatles, so that ought to tell you something.

 
This is a Christmas edition post.

My favorite band of all time, Dreams So Real (DSR), came from Athens, GA during a period where it was the hotbed of pop music. REM, the B52s, among others were based in Athens in the 80s. The most talented of all of them, IMHO, was DSR. They had some success and made it to mainstream radio and MTV, but those of us who bought their music and listened to all of the tracks, and not just the aired ones, realized these guys were making some of the best music of the time. But like many deserving musicians it didn't work out for them. They disbanded in 92. At the last live show I saw them play I talked to one of the members and he told me they compiled a CD of unreleased work, Nocturnal Omissions. For $15 it went home with me. On it were two Christmas songs. The second is below.

It is a little different Christmas song than you typically hear. Listening to the words in my interpretation it is about unrequited love. The singer wishes just for Christmas day the center of his affection would respond in kind thus sparking a lasting love. It is a beautiful song and should you listen to it I think you will believe me when I say this band should have been more popular. Their talent is evident.

 
Sitting here at work, chained to my desk. Especially grateful for music on days like this. I appreciate a drummer who can also sing. RIP Levon.

Paradise by the dashboard lights is probably unrelatable to today's 20 somethings. The condition of a long-term love commitment in order to go to bed with a guy is seldom practiced.
