A little progress on the boat floor...and a question..

John, have you used chopped strand mat with Epoxy? I was under the impression that the seizer(Glue) for the chopped strand mat required the effect of the resin and MEK(Poly or Vinal) to work properly but this is close to a WAG, since I never wet out Mat with epoxy? It is very good to bring...

    Storing outboard/boat

Farrukh, I am assuming you are running a four stroke. If so you dont have to mix oil in the gas, but some do, to oil the valves, however check the OEM papers to make sure they allow it. The biggest thing is the gas. If you can find it, (Search Cam 2 race gas) get a gallon and run a bit...

    Stitch and Glue Gunning Box

Derek, looks awesome and a lot easier than fitting the wood chines if you are not used to doing them. I thank you for adding to the ideas on these. They are a lot of fun to hunt out of and make a big difference getting birds in close compared to sitting up or standing on the shore. Keep...

A little progress on the boat floor...and a question..

Ed, use vinal ester resin or polyester resin to do a pure glass fabric repair. If you are working with a mix of wood and cloth, epoxy is much better over the wood at holding the cloth to it and will stick to the fiberglass.

    kind of plywood?

Tod you are very nice to say that and I have no "friendship" issue or shortage of equal respect or learning from your work. As I believe you have recognized. I still stand on my experience. If Ice is the spec issue the material I would choose is welded aluminum over all others except steel...

    Catch and Release----NDR

Al we picked up a lost racing pigeon once here after a bad storm. Returned it to the owner 60 miles away. He had rollers too. My kids learned a lot on that trip. Glad you only lost a few. I hear people over eat at McDonalds when the meal is free. Bob

The driver of the boat was responsible for the damage of the vessel. On that day the right move would have been to turn back at the ramp. Being gung ho and wanting to have a great hunt I pushed on. The ice was black 5\8 to 3\4 inch thick fresh water not salt. I have repaired fiberglass...

    kind of plywood?

Had to look up Hyperbole so I knew what was being said. "a deliberate exaggeration used for effect." No exaggeration in any part that I can find. Just examples of boats that worked using the material that was asked about for the time that was required. Here are the requested pictures...

Meat Smoking - Recipes and methods - photos of smoker added at end

Dave, your neighbors must be very worried. If you are looking for a cold smoke you may not be able to lower the heat enough with the large fryer burner. Try a run with it on its lowest simmer flame setting and see what temps you hold at. If it is too high for your liking a smaller burner...

    kind of plywood?

I forgot. I also posted hundreds of pictures of wood boats of all kinds built by all types of builders for the last three or four years since I don't like nicer wood boats.

    kind of plywood?

Your right Tod I am mean and should not post in the sandbox because I use fir plywood and don't epoxy coat every boat I built inside and out. And they worked. Rich should not post because he builds boats every day and chooses fir for some of his work and logged countless hours in fir work...

    kind of plywood?

Tod, The reason I posted is because I completely disagree with your take on the subject and built my first two boats which proved it to me as a beginner. Not being enough to just say I did it, Earl Brockway built hundreds of boats and they were all able to give very good service life to the...

Having a great time in Kuwait!

Paul, Interesting. Are you there for work or church? Very interested in those boats. My father was a history major so my sister and I had to take a lot of it in school. Western Civilazation was a big part of that. Stay safe. Bob

    kind of plywood?

Tod, for the 10 to 12 year lifespan requested, I disagree that any glass or epoxy is required on the inside of the boat and I am willing to bet that for the bulk of duck hunters who hunt about (X) number of days a year and then store the boat inside for the rest of the year no glass is required...

    kind of plywood?

Todd, I do know you use the best materials and go for a high degree of finnish like Morton and many others here, and that is fine. But I feel that the same ply would work with stitch and glue or solid stock chines\frames\stringers. John Gardner was one of the pioneers of the movement to...

    kind of plywood?

Phil, There has been a long tradition on the East Coast for working boats that were built out of AC fir ply that used a frame for strength instead of stitch and glue. These were not coated in Epoxy to sheath the hull from the salt on the outside or the fresh rain on the inside. Most lived...

Having to put the dog down with kids in the family

Andrew, Repeating what others have said, Very sorry to hear of your tough choice and the hard part of having a dog as a family member. I faced the same situation and was not able to have the chance to say one way or the other. We knew it was coming and were preparing for the time. I came...

Saving the BEST for Last (Youth Season Pics)

Well done Thomas, I am starting to think that the kids are the ones who should be telling us how to do it as well. We all are getting to live thru you young guys and the great hunts you have had this year. Keeps the fire lit and makes the early alarm clock worth it every time. Enjoy the...
