Some early morning rays of sunshine

Hi Al, great to see your pictures! Sorry to hear that you didn't have much of a season last year. We had way too much water last year so the ducks were scattered and most of the spots we typically hunt were flooded out. This year looks to have much more potential. With classes done now, I...

Your First Shot Gun to the one you use today

I don't even know the brand of my first shot gun, it was actually a loaner. I was 10 and dad borrowed a single shot 20 gauge for me to use. I can remember missing several ducks before finally connecting on one, and hitting my first goose (well first one in the air) it was straight overhead and...

    Heartbroken

Phil, I'm so sorry for your loss. We've enjoyed the stories you've shared about Kodi over the years.

    Ugh, another full moon

Al, I'm doing well. I finished school (my third stint...I'm a glutton for punishment) and we returned to Missouri a few years back. My job (2 new courses to develop) has kicked in to overdrive this fall, so hunting opportunities have been rather limited thus far. Hopefully the ice will stay...

    Ugh, another full moon

Al, congrats on a great hunt, even better dog work, and another season up and running! I also wondered about you while visiting NM Tech last month. I didn't have time to visit Bosque, but I was thinking about it and your stories from that area. It looks like an interesting area to hunt.

    kansas hunting ?

There are ducks there :). I didn't hunt a LOT while I was there, my goal was to finish grad school quickly. I didn't take my boat when we moved there [shocked] Still, I did have some good hunts while living there. It wouldn't be a destination duck hunting state for me, but there are huntable...

Do You Like Yours With or Without? And why?

For a long time (94-08) I had a pickup with a camper shell. I loved the ability to keep whatever I carried safe and dry. The price of a new (or even good used) 4wd truck drove me to buy a small SUV. The versatility is great, they get better gas mileage, and to be honest, it will do most of...

duckboats.net is 10 (now 20). Can you believe it?

Wow...I remember back in 1999, dad's friend had sold the private land we'd hunted my entire childhood the previous season...It was a pretty cushy place: walk-in, dry pit blinds, decoys already out, right next to a national wildlife refuge. My duck hunting days were teetering on the brink, I...

Serious question for breeders, and/or owners of hunting dogs; preferably Labrador retrievers.

I don't know if you're thinking about spaying, but there is a lot of literature out there about this....and a lot of stories. Here are a couple of them. I imagine there are others here that know more about the pros/cons than I do...

Did you ever drop a duck into your boat

A buddy and I were hunting a local conservation area several years ago. Hunting out of small boats tucked into a row of standing corn. We were 'on the X' and had pretty consistent action. We were about limited out when a small group of mallards started to work. As they drew closer, a MUCH...

    Rigging puddlers

Phil, I run into people all over the place that either attended or have someone close to them who did. I worked here for a few years before going back to school and had lots of other places I could have gone, but chose to come back. I remember during my interviews the first time around, one...

    Rigging puddlers

Awesome! I teach at Northwest. I'm not biased or anything, but it's a great school and environment up here. What's he going into?

    Rigging puddlers

I use a modified version of the Texas rig with a cord lock on the free end of the decoy line (opposing the weight). I snug the lock up to hold the weight tight against the keel of the decoy. Picking up is still pretty quick, and I can put the decoys in a single bag with minimal tangling.
