After what has been a great and varied season for Pete and I this year, we had an accident that cut the season a bit short. Pete cut himself on a retrive and ended up with the worst pad cut he has had. We both ended the day with some jewlery, Pete on his foot in the form of staples and I got some for the lanyard.

What a great year we had and to end it up with some nice big local geese was nice.

Tod, I know that look. My wifes Charlie Brown has it on his face even though his mouth is full and there is the faintest chance of something else to fetch. Hope his foot heels up fast.

Sorry to hear about the vet bill. Those are never fun. Does he have to wear a collar\cone?

Hope Pete has a speedy recovery, great to see you had a good season. Coincidentally, Chance (my CBR) had sliced his pad on the last day also -- not too deep but we called it a day by noon. The snow made it easy to see he was bleeding, it wasn't bothering him but I didn't want it to get worse.

No bands this year, but still had great hunts. Learned a few new things, meet some new duck hunters and made some new friends.

Probably oyster shell Bob, could be glass, but probably shell. It isn't uncommon, but happens seldom enough where it isn't worth not hunting him. This is the first time I've taken him in for a pad cut.

Seeing that we were also going to extract some of their bi-valvian bretheren later in teh day, it seems like it may have been self defense.

I have to laugh at the "snow made it easy" comment. I woudl love to see the look of whomever launched at the ramp after we left. He was leaving a pretty impressive blood trail to the truck.

They are so predictable, aren't they?. There was a flock of Canadas sitting on a sand bar a 1/4 mile away protesting our activities. I'm sure he was ruminating on the possibility of swimming over there and getting one of them. :). He loves those big Canadas.
 
I realy like that pic., & I think it would look great framed for the wall. Hpoe Petes paw heals quickly.

You aren't kidding on the vet bill - with all due respect to our vet, it is highway hobbery. I'll be forever scarred by the fact that the Vet bill when Pete got bit by a rattlesnake in MT was $36 for antibiotic shot and pills, steroid shot, and exam. The bill for walking through the door and weighing him here is almost double that.

No collar for Pete, He is usually pretty good about not messing with wraps.

Thanks! Not that you don't get nice blue-wings during the season, but that late youth they must be spectacular.

Yep, he is sleeping it off like the season is over, that is for sure. He looks pretty good, it is obviously sore, but not too bad.

The teal have been spectacular, and the drakes have been here thick for a few weeks now.

Sorry to hear about Pete. Barkley got a cut on the pad on his wrist this year but it only put him out for a week.

Did Pete make a mess like this?:

It's Feb 1. Just how much did that shorten your season? He should be healed up fine for the Spring Brant hunt.

I had a dog that split a pad in 2 from sawgrass a couple of years ago. Looked like someone gutted a pig in the boat by the time we got back to the boat ramp.

Per my conversation with Ira, clean up the pad, applied antibiotic ointment (as someone else held the dog down), and wrapped in gauze. The pad healed and he was hunting again in about a week. It was amazing how fast it healed. Your dog will be just fine.

Thanks Jeff that is how I've always treated pad injuries in the past, even some pretty nasty ones and you are right they heal up nice. This one was a different class and seperated his pad right through, and wasn't a managable size or shape. I didn't want it to close without antibiotics and I sure don't want it open given its size adn shape.
