Airbrush Questions

I know there are a couple guys here who use them on their decoys so I figured it would be a good place to ask for recommendations.
Just to let you know this will not be used much on decoys. I paint some fishing lures, I like to do some camouflaging of small items and maybe a little painting of decoys or wood carvings. I have a cheap little thing now that is fine if I only want to cover a large area or use stencils. While I still mostly want it to cover areas nice and evenly I'd like one that will at least be OK painting some finer details.
I mostly use acrylics, I'm not a big fan of solvents for clean up.
So is a single action like the Paasche H good enough for basic painting or is a double action more useful? Internal or external mixing? Tip sizes? I'd like to get only what I need not a lot more then I need.

I already have a Silentaire compressor, cheap deal at Hobby Lobby some time ago. It's not adjustable so can a regulator be added to turn down the pressure some if I need to?

Thanks,
Tim

Tim,
My first brush was Pasche vl-3 , double action . Its just what Im used to working with not a "you gotta get this statement".Most recommendations for an airbrush are you need this because I like it or sell it.
If you have some/any experience painting you should be fine with a double action, push down for air , back for paint. With lures you should be able to do a LOT with simple stencils( hard lines, fading , dots , etc.) . Take a look at this site www.dixieart.com , I have done bussiness with them in the past and they were very helpfull, reeeally fast on the shipping , and good pricing. You can probably get all your answers there. You will need a regulator and a water trap( I have one thats both ), I was taught that when you start with an airbrush don't try to paint anything untill you can write your name with it !!! That will make sense later.
Maybe give Willy a call at the duck blind. I think he deals in Badger , I haven't worked with one so I reaally cant say anything about them.
If I can help feel free to gimmie a call or shoot me an e-mail

Tim,

I'd go with a double action. I swear by the Paasche AB turbo - can sign my name with it. However, I have had others tell me they got so frustrated with it they "sailed" it across the room. Bottom line is there's a learning curve with all of 'em.
If you get an AB try to pick up the Jerry LoFaro video on maintaining & tuning it - worth its weight in gold.

Thanks guys.
After reading some more I'm thinking the VL looks like it would do the most for me. I'll keep on reading up on them so I'll probably change my mind a few more times. :-)
I'll do some looking into the badger too.

Tim,

I have 3 air brush for paint my decoys,,,1 Pasches ( AB ) and and 2 badgers ( 100SG ) and the150 ...

The 150 will more used for paint big area ( not used a lote , my wife used it for paint the cake top cover hihihih )

The 100SG work fine in small and large area , ( probably the VL look very close) , for the price it a very good one to buy , because we used template nad tape all the time , it a good one to have.

The AB now, for me, it the best air brush a decorative decoy can buy, very easy to change color ( in 2 secondes) , for very small are only. But not so easy to used , need a lot of practice you know, and the price is high. On a decorative decoy, i used it over 100 hours, and you know i carved since 24 years now , i buy the AB in the earlyer 90', i change for a new one last year ...

A good place for buy a airbrush is in louisiana, some it the best price i never find ,

http://www.dixieart.com/ , i buy few stock there, good survice and good price .

But i buy the last Ab in MDI Maine, because it a rush to have and used a stategy for safe on custom .. hehehehe

The only air brush i clean every time it the AB , the 2 others when i finish the painting , i just put in a water container ( important , the water is a distillated water , for dont have problem with mineral on and in the air brush ),

On AB, it easy to shoot oil and acylic paint, another tips, you dont need to buy a special air brush paint, just mix tube paint like commun brand in a small container with water, need to mix on a liquid homogene .. and used it over and over ..
