Blackbellied Whistling Duck Season

Thought y'all would find this of interest! Come down to the Big Easy and swat mosquitos and race gators to your downed ducks! The fishing is world class and BBWD's and Fulvous are some fine eating fowl!

Wonder why they didn't just make them part of the bag during the early teal season???

I saw the same thing in coastal Alabama before I left, BBWDs all over the place during summer and early fall, gone by time regular duck season came in.
Similar to purple gallinules, but they normally left even before early teal. Never took one when gallinule and early teal seasons were concurrent.

I assume the thinking is that some hens could still be sitting on or just hatched second broods??
I know from when I worked in Mobile, we would see BBWDs standing on nesting boxes from very early spring through summer.

I think the consensus was if BBWD's were in season during early teal, folks would focus on shooting teal and not BBWD's

Now that might be worth a trip over to LA in Oct. I'd love that season.

Would it be more private land hunting or can you also get on them on public land?

I'd love to float my black belly rig again. If the water is shallow enough, it would be fun to break out my black belly silhouettes again.

Weirdest thing was walking across the street about 10 years ago to speak to my new neighbor, and as we are BSing (he was also a duck hunter), a BBWD lit in a tree on the fenceline about 50 yards away from us. This was in North Alabama, and both of us looked at it, and back at each other, absolutely dumbfounded. Neither of us had seen one in N AL ever in our lives. As I understand, they are getting more and more common further north than the coast now.

Whistling Duck pickleweed set made for Hitch (John Hitchcock). They all fit into a remarqued antique box. Can't remember the name of Hitch's chocolate lab back then. He had the lab and a springer that were both good water dogs.
