Boat building: Best way to attach canvas to coaming?

Good morning and happy Sunday! :)

Those of you with canvas hides, or anyone with an opinion really, what is the best way to attach canvas to the coaming rail?

I’m planning to have a removable canvas cuddy, somewhere between 4-5 feet long at front of the boat. It needs to be quite securely attached because at times I’ll be driving the boat with it up — 30hp WOT. Boat will also be used in salt water.

Should I use: toggle pins, lashing hooks, press studs or something else?

Thanks.

Least expensive way to go would be snaps.

They are OK if you plan to leaver the dodger on for the season. In any event, be sure to lubricate them. Sadly, I have not found them in Grey recently.

If putting on and off regularly, I much prefer Common Sense fasteners.

If in use whilst gunning, I want to conceal the bright (chrome) finish. They are also available in Black for military use.

Nylon fasteners are also available:

Hope this helps!

Matthias,
Steve pretty much nailed it. The only thing that I would add is if you are forced to go the Snap route, be sure to use Stainless Steel. If you can't get SS, the Heavy Action brass will also work. Common Sense fasteners really are the best but expensive. RM

I bought the sailrite fastener tool that used a rivet gun. I very very much liked the tool and the fasteners were good quality.

Josh,
Good point; the tool you use makes all the difference. I started with a snap set, the type that requires a hammer, but quickly purchased one of these and it made all the difference. RM
