December Workbench

I wished I could slip out into the shop on Christmas day. My wife gets real cranky when I even pretend to need to go to the shop when she's not at work. I spent two whole days without doing anything in the shop, it drives me crazy. Looks cold out that window there. The lowest temperature we ever had in Fairbanks was 52 below the week between Christmas and new years.

whoa.... you get this kind of attention too? I get half a day on sundays to play in the shop and that is only because she sleeps in. Mondays are my days, so I can pull 12 hour shifts in the shop if I want to. I wouldn't think you would have got that kind of attention since its also your work place. I guess now that I think of it, she got a little upset with me coming to work yesterday and today. I thought my missy was the only one that gave the cold shoulder when I snuck off to my play room. Makes me feel a little better someone else has to deal with it as well.

We are fortunate they want our attention still though. We should cherish the time we get with our lovely better halves... unless they are cranky too. Then I like to disappear. Just figure if shes going to be cranky with me around her, she can be cranky without me while I am in the shop all the same.

yep, you know when I'm in trouble, I'm getting lots more work done. Same thing goes when her nose is in her phone and watching hallmark. She doesn't even know I went to the shop. When it comes to making stuff, I'm relentless, sitting down in a recliner is not relaxing. After 44 years though, I'm pretty good about knowing the boundaries. Time to get back to making decoys.

We're supposed to be in the -30's each night and highs of -15. Nice little New Year cold snap.

Been sanding and prepping this pintail. I'll set the eyes this afternoon and then hit it with the first coat of sealer.
I'm sanding on a bunch of wigeon too. Sanding filling, sanding, sealing and getting ready for paint takes a great deal of time.

A few wigeon gunners in the works. It's a bit cold out. Forecast was for -36 this morning. It only got to -10. Happy day in a warm shop. Woodstove is going.
Happy New Year

Greenwing drake finished up for Delta Waterfowl's annual decoy hunt. It was finished just prior to Thanksgiving, but I am just now getting to post it.

No carving over Christmas, but spent it with my dad, his wife, and my sister, brother-in-law, and niece. First time we have all been together in a few years due to deployments, living across the country, etc.

Dad gave me a Poygan gunning box for Christmas that he bought at auction, listed as a shoeshine box.

We (the kids) went in together and got him an Orvis Spey rod; he and I went and fished Atlantic Salmon this past November, and it was an amazing trip.

I have often found that the finish sanding of a bird takes longer than all the work that goes before....

All the best,

SJS

I put a few coats of sealer then a coat of gesso. All the dang imperfections jump out. More sanding.
My birds so no deadlines.
I'm trying to build up a big inventory for the spring outdoor Sportsmans show in Fairbanks. This will be a first time doing this kind of thing.

I almost never hand sand anything other than the bill. Once I figured out how the guys were using texturing paste to do vermiculation on the back of their divers, I started using my tile adhesive that I use for burlapping, virtually the same thing. I can brush the wood carving smooth with a couple layers of tile adhesive instead of sanding. When I do want feather detail I use a stone in my rotary file instead of using my wood burner, it saves hours of detailing time. If it's a wood hunting decoy I'll seal it with oil based enamel, flock it with oil based enamel and airbrush it with oil based enamel. When I'm doing something like this decorative life size green wing in wood, I'll do most of the painting with acrylic artist paint.

I hate sanding and do as little by hand as possible.
