Duck Commander's banning from his own show

I once held Phil in high regard as a duck hunter and call maker. That changed a bit after I met him personally at the Oregon Waterfowl festival a few years back. He gave a seminar, not about duck hunting, but it really was about his religious views. I didn't drive across 2 states to hear about his perspective on God, the bible, and how we all should behave...............he had a captive audience and being the pitch man that he is, he made the most of it to expound on his views.

He has every right to speak out about his beliefs, but don't use the old "bait and switch" to fill the tent, and then lay the fire and brimstone tirade on the folks expecting a duck hunting seminar.

He's a very smart and talented guy, ...................hope he finds what he is looking for.

The tragedy here is that this whole event is an indicator of the degradation of our society's morals and rights. For a person to make comments that reflect his moral/christian believes that were what this country was originally founded on and to be chastised and victimized for it is sorry. This event and implications goes way beyond the quality of the show.

Reason enough to keep the tube in the home!!!

War DAMN Eagle!!!!

Mike,

You got that right! Last year and 2011 I rooted for Alabama as we (Auburn) had nothing on the line. I was hoping to go 6-5, dreaming of 7-4, but beating Bama and playing for the crystal? It goes to show that Chizik had all the talent in the world but couldn't run with it. The 2010 National Championship was a product of Cam Newton, Nick Fairley and Gus Malzahn.

Yep, you got that right. Thankfully we were able to get Gus to come back.
Greatest thing about this year is that we have a team, not just two good players. With the crew we will have back next year, we should be right back in contention.
War Damn Eagle!

I've never watched the show.

I'm a strong believer in free speech rights, but if you say something controversial, you need to be expect the response. The right to free speech does not include a requirement for your employer to give you a platform to broadcast what you say.

As for Robertson's comments, I thought the anti-gay comments were over the top. I don't share his view point, but if he said it to me in a bar, I wouldn't have bothered to argue with him.

On the other hand, if someone at a bar told me that before the Civil Rights Act, blacks in the south were "singing and happy" and "no one was singing the blues", I'd certainly have words with him. (And perhaps send him a CD of some Leadbelly and Robert Johnson for good measure.) Then I'd get up and leave.

But forget all that. In the intro to the GQ article, Robertson is driving around in ATV with a loaded crossbow on the dash. The author says it was in case a deer happened by. That would be illegal where I come from--and even if it wasn't, not safe. I wouldn't have ridden in the vehicle with him.

Bottom line--not the kind of role model we need, and he deserves what he gets (within the law) from his employer. I've never watched the show, and I certainly won't do so now.

I almost wonder if he did this on purpose to sabotage the show. It has seemed to me that he doesn't care for it too much, just going along with it. Willie is the attention whore and money grubber.

My wife watched the Barbara Walters special last night and said Jase/Phil were the only ones not there because they were hunting.

I don't watch "Duck Dynasty," but I did watch his "Duck Commander" show on Outdoor a few years ago. It was interesting. But this new one is just ridiculously stupid.

Think what you want about Phil, but based on his background and lifestyle, I doubt he ever wanted this for he and his family. I'm sure the money is nice, but seems like the whole deal has gone out of control.

Pretty small percentage of the population make things very difficult because they run the media, or they are the gutless polititians who are in office.
Think, speak or do a interpretive dance about how you feel about Phil, its your right.
Its also Phil's right to speak.
I just hope our kids are smart enough to see through this BS. Or this country is screwed.

I don't care for the show and I think it's amazing all the merchandizing going on with that thing. The show is garbage. I don't understand why it is they are so popular. The fact that it is so popular has a lot to say about the dumbing down of America and the poor quality of modern entertainment. I'm not sure why anyone who reads GQ would be interested in Mr. Robertson's opinion about much of anything, not even beard grooming or camo fashions. None the less if you see what Robertson said that got him in trouble with A&E it was essentially paraphrasing generally accepted Christian doctrine regarding homosexuality and other behaviors regarded as sinful. He didn't attack anyone he simply pointed out what the scripture has to say. Contrast that to the wild, twisted, deviant, disgusting, and totally socially unacceptable behaviors of entertainers from the far left side of the spectrum that occur almost daily and are usually winked at by the media, and we can see that obviously there is a double standard in play here. Conservatives are carefully monitored for the slightest slip, and even if they don't make one, one is manufactured. Leftists do and say as they please with impunity.

I watched about 2 minutes of one of his first videos and decided I'd never watch anymore. I don't own or watch TV at home, I don't watch TV in hotel rooms, friend's homes or any other place except if I happen to see some sports. I can't imagine he and his show are doing anything positive for waterfowl, hunting or gun rights.

As far as I am concerned he is free to speak his mind and say whatever he pleases. That is his right.

His employer has every right to take whatever action they feel necessary to protect themselves and make it clear that he does not speak for the company. My employer makes it very clear when I am speaking on their behalf and I represent myself as speaking for them without permission or bring embarrassment to them they will take disciplinary action up to and including firing me. A&E are within their rights to do so.

I have no doubt that they will all figure out a way to make the best of this and that A&E, GQ and Phil Robertson will make more money out of this "free speech" exercise.

Bottom line is there is no longer free speech in this country......Can't do this and can't do that anymore.....I can't believe the downward spiral this country is in

Yea, and here in NY we get a front row seat to watch it go first.

I have never liked the guy.... I do not like the show... I think he has done nothing to actually help duck hunting or the image of duck hunters...but I do hope he retained all rights to DC and DD. I fully support his right to speak his beliefs. I agree that A&E has the right to employee who they want. That being said.. WHO DID THEY THINK THEY WERE FILMING????? How did they not know this is who is was? SO I guess the question is did his contract have a clause against him speaking as he did....

I think most of you are missing the point here. This whole situation isn't about if you like the show, duck hunting, duck calls or really even his show.... It's about the liberals taking over this country and making free speech something thats punishable by losing your job.

As Americans we have the freedom to say what we want and believe in any religion we choose. This man is a Christian and stated his beliefs then was persecuted for it because it wasn't deemed "politically correct" by A&E Network. This country is going downhill fast because of the liberals, Obamunism and the lack of good 'ole fashioned values.

While you may not like his show, you should all support the man because his constitutional right to free speech and religious beliefs have been trampled. He is free to say anything he wants, the same as the rest of us. In addition, does anyone not see the parallel to how liberals are attacking our gun rights? C'mon guys.... wake up, who cares if you dont like the show? This is a lot bigger situation. Frankly I am a little shocked at the reactions here as I believe they are very short sighted.

Boy, all the comments are interesting here...almost like I kicked over an anthill. I guess not many lawyers hunt ducks--Phil is not an employee of A&E; he has a contract. If the contract gags his personal views(on air or off)then he is being compensated for that and has agreed to it. If it's silent, A&E could wind up owing him more than they've paid for all the shows to date. The GQ article is outside the purview of TV execs--unless it is owned by the same conglomerate. In which case the editors should get the sack for publishing stuff that would harm the franchise. Since all on-screen performers used to have to have a Screen Actors Guild card (don't know it this is still true) it would be interesting to see if SAG stuck up for a member's right to speak for rampant, serial, licensed heterosexuality.

Think Federal will put his endorsed Black Cloud on a fire sale to get rid of it? Or pull it back and "re-home" it in a rainbow box with a pink label?

I read the one comment about nothing we say here having any effect on anything. And here I always thought hot stove wisdom was awaited by the multitudes! Ah well...

+1, Only thing I would add is: You should also proud of him as a successful business man, took one of his passions in life and with hard work turned it into a successful business.

Bill, I really enjoyed your perspective on this. Actually I enjoyed reading through the thread although I don't necessarilly agree with everyone. One thing for sure though, Duck Dynasty is not about duck hunting. It is about the family and their business. It is also not a serious show and was never intended to be. It is, however, hugely popular. I am still amused that my wife watches it and she has nothing positive to say about my hunting. The comment about the Andy Griffith Show was pretty accurate.

Paul,
I am pretty amazed at the popularity of the show as well. Since I don't own a TV I've missed all the hoopla--saw a couple of episodes a long time ago before it was Dynasty...but the fact so many non hunters who are either lukewarm to hunting or even opposed like the show pretty much shows its focus on down-home living is the draw. That cracker-barrel humor I've heard Sy is famous for, stuff like that.

The comments about the Andy Griffith show are interesting...I kinda have a hunch if that show aired today for the first time the professonal protestors would find something to hate about Aunt Bea. What a world it was where a sheriff didn't feel the need to wear a gun, let along a flack jacket and ski mask--this year our game wardens were tricked out like that! I'm serious.

I was a little surprised at all the posts disavowing use of a Duck Commander call. Irrelevant to the issue, really.
Just another duck call among hundreds of over priced duck calls. When I see the page after page of bright shiny
duck calls like some kind of jewelry in the catalogs--and the prices!--I remember what they used to say about gaudy fishing lures: they're designed to catch fishermen, not fish. My old cheap Haydels and Yentzens called all the ducks I needed to call, and the surviving Yentzen still does. But I can't fault a guy for riding the wave and making a living for his family.
Bill

"Fear God, love your neighbor, hunt ducks."

Watch the show every week with the kids and my wife. No bad language, its entertaining and they end the show in prayer. Yep lots and lots not to like.

Phil had said several months ago that he was going to be stepping back from the show after they finished filming the current season they were working on.
