February Workbench..............

Good morning, Dave~

Sounds like a fine day afield for you. Is it common to hunt Snipe over decoys - or is that a Speer Specialty?

I've never done it, but I always wanted to tackle some sort of shorebird and my main snipe hunting partner has successfully used plastic snipe decoys before. It was natural for me to choose a snipe as my first shorebird.

We could have decoyed them but it may have been more about being on the X. Yesterday when we entered our second patch my partner had only one bird in his bag. He stayed within a 50 yard radius and the birds wanted in there so bad that after he blew them out they kept coming back, so he would squat next to some high cover and shoot them on their way back in. So the birds would have come without decoys anyway, but it seemed it would be fun to use them. We did observe snipe circling almost like puddle ducks looking for a good place to land and eat, and thought perhaps the gunning would be faster with some friends deployed.

Jeffery I really like your bird. Especially the carving style. Is it a full size bird or a miniature? Hard to tell from the picture

Will, It's life size a little over 11" long. Thanks for taking the time to comment. I really have been trying hard to improve, and it's a real boost to get a comment good or bad. Thanks , Jeff

Jeffrey- Where the wings crossover is a great touch. Adds some flair to the decoy but maintains the appearance of a working decoy

Jode,

Those blues are awesome! I don't comment a lot on the forums, but those just struck a nerve and I had to.

I have always admired your painting style, and even more so after sitting thru your demo at Strongsville a couple of years ago. Really like those.

Common Merganser for donation to CT waterfowlers banquet in April. Usually I would embed a metal rod in the bill from the bottom, but I decided to carefully drill a pilot hole from the back, down the bill, and sink a 5" screw. I only poked out the side of the bill twice in trying to get it right ;)
