JULY - What's on your Workbench?

Break from decoys to do a "musical instrument."

Some nice swirls & grain on this inlaid (salt-cedar)goose call:

Bob in that 2nd picture I touched it fully aware that my finger should feel those waves in the wood grain. My gosh that is beautiful.

Finished another redhead

Started my first shorebird. I always wanted a snipe to be my first since I love hunting them, but I've been intimidated by the plumage patterns. I've got a couple more redhead orders to fill but I needed a break, and figured I'd never learn it if I didn't try. I popped a big knot out of the head while carving, so after painting it I'll antique it up a little and use the knot as a feature instead of a problem.

Dave~

I will NOT make the obvious suggestion about Red Knots....

And, looks like you might have gotten carried away with your nail gun!

Great work all around!

three greenwings, one gaddie hen, one sprig hen, one widgeon drake, AND the continuing saga of the 400 miniwoodies, along with a new pair of flying mallards.
Sorry gang, no pics, unless i can forward for some kind soul to post.

Hi fellas,
Bill from Maryland. Brand new here. Tried in vein to post a wood duck drake I made for my niece and her new husband for their wedding. Got a message stating image exceeded 100GB or something to that effect.
I am not that good of a decoy maker, but I am really poor at technology.
Any suggestions??
Thanks..... I have viewed this forum several times and like the friendliness and helpfulness of all the guys

Bill~

I always use Photobucket. Accounts are free. Then I just Copy and Paste - and avoid the file size limit.

All the best,

Shawn, as of today, i have drawn and bandsawed 150. Hoping to reach the halfway point by the weekend. Little buggers make one heck of a pile! Thank heaven for grocery bags.
Started messing with the fliers during a lull about three weeks ago-They have been a hoot tinkering with wing positions and making groupings. Working on painting a pair of mallards now, in addition to the corks that Bill posted for me.
I figure that during recovery from shoulder replacement surgery in two weeks, i should be able to mess around with the carving part of the woodies. Happily, i am left handed, and all the right hand will have to do is support a couple of ounces of wood. The left can do the rest of the work.

Shoulder surgery is not fun George. I had mine fixed two years ago and it is doing fine now, but the first part of the recovery is rough. If I can offer any advise, it would be to stick to as aggressive rehab schedule as your insurance company will allow. Hurts like hell when you are doing rehab but the next day is much better than the days you don't do the work. Remember when you are ignoring your doctors, and carving, keep your injured arm close to the body to reduce pressure on shoulder. Good luck with it but don't push so hard that you have to get a second surgery.

Haha... the knot ... or knot hole... is REAL red :D

I did a crash test dummy tonight. A very quick paint job to get an idea of what I needed to do and didn't need to do. Learned a lot. Glad I didn't attempt a snipe a couple years ago, glad I finally decided to go for it now.

Good morning, Dave~

Your approach of "sketching" in the important colors, tones and patches makes so much sense. It really helps to understand what's important - and, hopefully, what other Snipe are looking for. It gets to the essence of painting gunning stool.

All the best,

SJS
