Last years restoration...continued

Geo,

What kind of boat are you hunting out of. If I remember you launch out of Massapequa? Even at low tide and a biger boat you should be able to some goot spots.

I sent you a PM with my phone number. Give me a call I'll tell you about some good low water gunning spots

Geo,

Here is what it looks like at our marina. This is a brand new 45' Sea Ray Sundancer stuck in the mud.

We have a very soft bottom in the bay here so there would be no damage hull, props, shafts etc. The main problem is if the boat gets hung up on it's cleats. Then it may pop a few cleats and do some fiberglass damage where the cleats rip out from the deck. Also, if the A/C pump is running it can pick up mud and clog the sea strainer and get into the system causing the boats heat to fail and then everything can freeze and crack if it's cold enough.

The top side is now ready for primer. I'm going to try and get back to the shop late tonight so I can get the first coat of primer on and time the second coat of primer for tomorrow morning around 5 or 6am.

I'll stop back later this evening to start the paint job

You have done a fantastic job John and thanks for posting the pictures and keep them coming Im enjoying them.
God Bless
Eddie.

Well here it is in Pettit Dead Dull Grass #3303, first coat, but it's green and starting to look like a duck boat. Second coat will go on before work in the morning. I'm sure we will be busy at work and I wont have much time to play with it untill after work. I would like to finish the motor mount and get it mounted by tomorrow night.

You have that thing looking nice. My project has bogged down a bit. Since the weather has turned colder, my epoxy is taking F-O-R-E-V-E-R to cure. Next time, I will use a faster hardner.

Just as I thought, I did not get much done today.
I did manage to get the last coat of paint on the boat and primed the motor mount.
I guess thats something.
I'll be back on the boat again tomorrow (my day off) to start getting the cleats and the motor mount installed.
I'm still up in the air about making a cockpit combing or using awning rail to secure the dodger to the foredeck. Any comments on this topic are welcome, pros & cons.
No photos today, they would just look the same as the last photos.

Coming down the home stretch.
Got the motor mount painted

Replaced a few rib braces. Only one was in poor shape but I figured while I'm at it I might as well pull out any that were going to need attention some time down the road.

I did not get to install the cleats today. When I went to install them I noticed that they were slightly different. I ordered new ones so they will all match. I'll install them tomorrow along with the motor mount and put the cockpit floor back in.

Charlie,

I'm going to save that project for the off season. I don't want to think about how many hours will be spent sanding the interior of this boat. It had been treated with green cuprinol and I'm not sure how to best prep it, besides sanding, to get a good bond with an epoxy. I'll have to ask a friend who is more into that aspect of woodworking.
In the meantime, I am going to seal the exposed surfaces of the new rib braces. The surfaces that can not be seen have been coated with lifecaulk to seal and bond to the existing ribs and hull bottom.
I will do almost anything with out hesitation but I hate sanding, sanding and more sanding. I think it's from the my younger days when my father would have me help sand wood untill my arm were ready to fall off and then say " your not done yet, keep sanding". I think now a days they call that forced child labor. Unfortunately, I don't have a son to pass this tradition down to, I have three teenage daughters and there is no way I can get any of them to help. So I'm on my own.
However, now that your done with your boat if you ever feel the eurge to do some sanding let me know, I may have a job for you with a view of the bay as a bonus.

Just finished up on the canvas dodger / spray shield. After much thought going back and forth with several idea this is what I came up with.

When the weather is nasty and I need as much cover as I can get this is how it will be with the top in the full up position

Enjoy the first hunt.

John,
Nice job with the dodger. I will have to personally check it out sometime. that is pretty much exactly what I'd like to do with mine.
