Here is the finished Black Duck Card Holder - I painted it with oils.

I cut the "back of the card slot at ~ 75 degrees.

I cut the canvas for the bottom a little bit smaller thn the bottom itself and then just glue it on with Titebond II.

I got on a roll and so also did a Brant. I will probably wax or oil it after the acrylic paint cures to give it a bit of patina.

All the best,

very well done Steve.

Hen mallard is based to take to Ohio next week. I am attending Jode's class on painting. He is doing black ducks which is not a common bird on this side of Mo. Figure I can fudge through a little of the colors for a hen mallard.

Teal is a bird I was commissioned to do. One of my favorite patterns with some upgrades to the carving.

flatties are for a nice lady to paint on in Ohio. I met her in San Diego and she did not have time to carve a bird and bring it from England to attend the shows.

Steve: I love the card holders. Is the 75 degree cut on a separate piece glued on or from one piece? Also thanks for starting off the March thread.

Tom: Good luck in Ohio. I plan on making it someday. Nice gesture on the flatties.

I get the body out of a single block. I saw the bevel, cut out the "slot", then glue the block back together, using 2 deck screws as clamps until the glue cures.

Bob - Nice blackjacks. Showing a little Doc Baumgartner in them.

Last week when we were hunting snow geese, we were hunting over flooded corn. Believe it or not, I was the only diver hunter in the pit. :) We had ringnecks, bluebills, cans and redheads dive bombing our decoys. It was awesome! I am not sure any of my fellow hunters that day appreciated the show like I did...

Keep up the good work! Pat

Ive come to appreciate the minimalist in form and function. Doc operated a rental boat and decoy business and he made the decoys himself in the off season. He had to crank out a bunch and this style allows quick work of a body. After generous trimming on the band saw of waste wood,Ill bet its 15 minutes with a drawknife and spokeshave to a complete body.

I finally have something to post up here. I spent most of my time last year building my boat and didn't get much carving done. This year I hope to get some decoys done. I cut out 6 bluebill bobtails a couple of years ago and never finished all of them, so I figured that was a good place to start.

Bob - Gotta love it. Our forefathers were efficient putting even the power we have today to shame. I'd hazzard to guess how many scaup fell to their death over Doc's decoys.

Darin - Nice scaup! Love the bobtail!!

Mr. Sanford,

Hope you're staying warm. I really like the business card holder ; how much do you charge to make those in oils?

Went to the local woodworking machinery outlet to check out the "March Madness" sale. Came back later in the day and left with a new central collector to replace the one currently in the shop. All my dust-making tools (lathe, table saw, bandsaw, sander, etc.) had been connected to a 2 bag single -stage unit. This new one that replaces the old unit is a very nice (and remarkably QUIET!) cyclonic collector equipped with a 1 micron cartridge filter.

Caught the factory rep and got a great deal, and on top of that, they bought my old 2-bagger from me. Going to be a lot easier to clean and dispose of dust and chips than it was taking down those cloth collector-bags and emptying/cleaning them.

This is a brown cork hen that is one of the next wave of six for my 2014 rig - 2hens and 4drakes- im figuring it out as i go bob . I like the working time of the new paint and things are going nice .
