March 2014 Workbench Thread

Best investment there is for a wood shop. It really keeps the dust down. I have the Oneida system. Hitch

Beautiful birds! I really like the stylized paint jobs - especially the way you handles the tertials on the drakes.

All the best,

The decoys look great, love the Pintail. I hope that bird is going to be at the CWA dinner. I have to get Chris to show me how to post pictures.

Collin,
Before l looked at where you lived I knew those were Jersey birds. Great lines to them thanks for posting them!

Bob,
I am really enjoying your in process decoy pictures along with the finished products. I have decided one thing though if I ever order a pair from you they are going to be divers just to give you a challenge from all those mallards, pins and blackducks.

Bob~

Great Mallards! That swimming/feeding pose has so much action in it - just wonderful.

(But - looking at the bottom - I think you have those little feet in the wrong places.....)

All the best,

SJS

Ron~

Great Ringneck! He has that look that says he's the King of Coconut Grove. Between the palm fronds and the coconuts, though...maybe we need a "Salad Bar" thread each month....

Here is my Canvasback Cardholder - a donation to a local TU dinner. He is painted in oils with a satin spar varnish on top:

And, I put Minwax Furniture Wax on this Brant - which had been painted in flat acrylics. I like the luster but may use the satin varnish instead on future birds.

Also, although I used glass eyes in my first couple of cardholders, they look a little goggle-eyed to me. I prefer these without eyes. For species with colorful eyes (Whistlers, Broadbill), I think I will try painted copper tacks instead.

Now I've got to start some life-size birds for awhile....

All the best,

SJS

Awesome work everyone. What a cool idea with that coconut. Here is my second attempt at a decoy. Also the second paint job on this bird lol. I wasn't happy with the first one.

I am still working on getting my colors right along with my painting technique. Constructive criticism is appreciated. Thanks guys.

Tom, Shape of the decoy is real nice. Feather loyout on the back is nice to. I'd Simplify the paint until you get the feel for feathering. Check out Pete's Black duck from the Ohio show.
