March workbench thread.

Thanks Jode I've made the head and neck all in one piece and inletted it I found it to be alot harder. This way I just carve a head and it may not show well in the photos but there all a little different turned right or left and some of them I tuck the bills in closer to the chest just by shortening the neck a little and attaching them with West System.

struggling with, trying to carve some King Eider for a friend, getting closer but still not pleased with the heads, so we'll cut a couple more out and keep trying!

Carl~

Excellent birds! Everything I like - sweet curves everywhere and great, bold paint patterns. And, the mortised heads add that extra element of craftsmanship.

All the best,

SJS

I'm really digging that Can head on the left in the background CraigS.

You have me thinking about it. Looks like a good start. Let me know what it weighs when it is done.

will do, tried to weigh it the other day and the batteries were dead in my scale, but I bet this bird weighs maybe 2 1/2 lbs at most, probably closer to 2. The walls are probably between 3/4 to an 1in thick. Once the sides started to have a little flex in them, I stopped the hollowing.

Ha, no I just mean once it warms up enough to paint outside. Its still ice fishing season these days.

Mike~

Caribou Antler?!? Even with Multiple Choice or Twenty Questions - or Tue or False -I NEVER would have figured that one out - very cool!

BTW: I use limb wood from Shagbark Hickory for such.

All the best,

SJS

My progress has been slow but I'll be working on 2 bodies this weekend and fine tuning. Once these 2 are ready, I'll have 4 to paint.
