March workbench thread.

Growing up in Alexandria Bay, NY I always admired the work of Frank Coombs especially the Bluebills and whistlers. Glenn Sweet sent me the Coombs body pattern, and I got to work. Decided to use a piece of white pine salvaged from a barn built in the late 1800's. Not attempting a replica, but a tribute to his work. Carved a mold out of black walnut for the pad weight, attached with brass screws & a dab of 5200. Something very different for me, but really enjoyed it!!

Brian~

I, too, admire Coomb's work. Your Whistler is a fine tribute!

BTW: Were his birds solid-bodied or hollow?

All the best,

SJS

Steve , Great work on your Paintings AN ALL YOUR OTHER EFFORTS. for the show. I KNOW I ENJOYED IT VERY MUCH WHEN I CAME UP THE YEAR WITH MANY OF THE EARLY WINNING CARVINGS FROM EARLY DECOY SHOWS THAT WAS IN bABYLON THOSE YRS. THE SHOW FEATURED THEM . Let me know how to order one of the Tapes or CD you made up to sell to the Public.Being an avid BROADBILL SHOOTER IN MY EARLY DAYS WHEN THEY WERE HERE IN RARITAN BAY IN GREAT NUMBERS bROUGHT BACK SOME FOUND MEMORIES, iTS JUST A SHAME WE WILL NEVER SEE THOSE DAYS AGAIN.

Well I finally found time to paint and can post on one of the monthly threads. I found time to paint the other day but the block I planned to work on needed some adjustments to its base coat. After doing that I had some time left so I picked up this girl. She had been sitting for almost year. Just a quick simple gunning paint job no fancy ticking or paint. Just some simple wet on wet blends and combing
Its fun to paint all in one setting.

I am a Coombs fan as well. The Function is what I like the best. Sturdy decoy beefy tail. High head for visibility and no ice collection. Compact body stores in boat well. Your decoy captures the spirit of that talented carver. Well done. Bob

Brandon, very nice broadbill. Simple yet effective. Glad to see you back in the saddle.

Bob....baikal teal? They are neat little ducks. Can't wait to see how nice you pull them off.

Well done. I like the combing. Is there a step by step on that somewhere? I am working with texture paint and drybrushing on top, but that looks different.

Wow that's impressive frank . I gave up trying to post pict. I forgot how I did it before . I'm waiting until they make it easier to upload like other sites . ( hint hint)

Really nice bird Brandon. Love that high head position and simple paint scheme!

Here's two black ducks that I finished up today. I am currently in the process of learning how to carve Delaware river birds, so I did a little experimenting with the low head style on a bay bird.

Frank that is one hell of a turkey. Nice work. Colin I think those blacks are my favorite birds you did so far. You're cranking them out. Wish I could do birds that fast. Keep up the good work.

I know it has been said many times but the talents and knowledge on this site are truly amazing. Every month beautiful decoys are displayed and i truly enjoy them all each month.

One day i will have time to work on the decoys i have ready for carving or painting......

Brandon an awesome bird. It is nice to see a true gunner that could be maintained by the average hunter. I love that Bobtail
