My Christmas Present

Guys,
Blessed Christmas to you all. As a Lutheran pastor, I am up to my neck in services at Christmas so I covet the very idea of a Christmas Eve hunt ala Steve Sanford. Not in the cards for me.

But a post Christmas hunt is in the cards as a Christmas present.

I decided earlier this fall to leap out of my South Carolina environs and do a guided hunt in North Carolina between Christmas and New Year's.

I talked a friend in Virginia into going with me. We are going to use a guide in the Outer Banks for a two day hunt near Kitty Hawk.

Given El Nino, my expectations of shooting birds are low. But it will be my first duck excursion in 6 years. So I am pumped! it will be great just to see inky waves of birds in the sky again.

Leaving Sunday after my duties are finished, driving to Chesapeake, VA to drop off my wife at her sister's house. Getting picked up Monday by my friend for the quick drive to the Outer Banks.

I have never been to the OB so that in itself will be adventure for me.

I have learned from many previous hunting trips that you do your best job planning and then go with the flow of weather, bird movements, and all the other things we can't control.

I plan on having fun no matter what.

And that is a great Christmas present!

Enjoy the moment, Larry. With everything becoming a first for you please take camera/cell phone. I would love to see what it is like there where you will be hunting. What kind of ducks or maybe geese abound in the area for this time of the year?

I just looked at the time. Had to get up and check the new born pups. Serrano had 11 on the 23rd. You spoke of El Nino. We are expecting to get hammered tomorrow with a huge snow storm.

Merry Christmas to you. This is such a special day. I was just thinking of all the members of your congregation who will be enjoying this day listening to your messages. I was also thinking of the music being played and sung. May it be so very special.

I have a feeling you will totally be wrapped up in enjoying your post Christmas present! Good luck on your hunt.

Larry,
That sounds like a wonderful hunting trip. I wish the best of luck to you and your friend, hoping you have ducky weather and many birds. Merry Christmas.

Good for you Larry! The OBX is a fun place to hang out. I haven't hunted there, but we used to vacation there each summer. I've always wanted to try hunting it. I'll live that dream vicariously through you for now. Looking forward to your report. Good luck to ya and have fun.

Merry Christmas, Larry~

We had planned a similar trip for next month - but canceled for a variety of reasons. My sister is moving to Southport next year - so an exploration of the Outer Banks remains on my list.

All the best,

SJS
