I always enjoy trying new things.

This month I just finished up some hummingbirds for a friend.

A male ruby throat and a female Rufous. And the flowers are carved wood as well.

Might have mentioned that I had Spinal fusion surgery back at the end of July followed by a second procedure when recovery did not go well. Last few months have been a blur of constant pain & discomfort, leaving me without being able to do much of anything. Have finally hooked up with a pain management Doc who gave me an epidural that provided some relief and who I will continue to be treated by + I finally found a pain clinic that is willing to help me wean off the opiod (Oxycodone) and then hopefully the other pain meds.
This past Saturday, I went out in the studio and decided to try and paint one of the decoys that's been sitting for months - a ringbill hen. One of a trio of ringnecks (two drakes and a hen) that I started on well before my surgery. Tried to take it easy and just do as much as sitting fairly comfortably would allow each day. Wasn't always comfortable and my hip & leg let me know when I was pushing the limit. A week later this is the result:IMGP1030.JPG
Looks like this will be the first duck & goose season I'll miss in 50 years. However that gives me another goal = to be back at it next season.
Physical therapy starts this week, and I have been walking 15 minutes 3x daily + using the hot water therapy tub and walking in the lap pool at the community center. Progress feels incremental most days, but I am determined to get back to all the things I enjoy!!

Going to drag out a bunch of ringneck decoys I've done in the past few years and take a group picture....just for something to do to take my mind off mending. Will post them up later.
Hope everyone - especially the old coots - is having a good year so far. Appreciate every opportunity you get to be out in the marsh and on the water. Shoot 'em in the lips!

Got pulled away from the giant Hambone duck calls but finally this afternoon I was able to get back at it. Plan to focus on them all day tomorrow. Today's progress was making a jig for cutting the tone boards. The diameter of the call insert is 1 1/2".

That is awesome Eric! That wooden jig reminds me of the ones I made as I worked towards finding the right shape. Very cool!

Thanks Henry.

I forgot to mention. I'm videoing the build process for folks enjoyment. The videos aren't a blow by blow but rather provide a very quick look at the sequence of steps I used for the barrel and insert. It will probably be a month before I post them but I thought I'd mention it.

As my late father-in-law would have said; "Thanks for the warning!" 😁

Finally finished a gadwall that’s been sitting incomplete for a few years

Tom,

That is a Mighty Fine Gadwall drake Decoy. The carving & paint show cases the wood grain just right. A very good combination between the Life of the Wood and the Subject. The Decoy has classic style and will only get better with use. Two Thumbs Way UP.

Best regards
Vince

Not at all duck related, but it does prove that an old dog can learn new tricks.

I am self learning, a computer software program, in which I can created an accurately dimensioned 3D model. After which, the 3D model can be used to write a CNC program, to either "print" the part or "machine" the part to the proper dimensions.

Figuring out just where and how the different "sketches" must be drawn to create a full 3D model, has been challenging at times.

The project at hand is to create a fishing rod holder that can be mounted to my E-bike to carry a fishing rod with me. I slapped together a prototype using zip ties. The custom designed clamps will replace the zip ties.

The two halves will be drawn together with a stainless steel #8 machine screw and hex nut. The small opening clamps to the bike rack while the larger opening simultaneously clamps the piece of PVC. The PVC receives the fishing rod.

Sadly I do not have a 3D printer yet, so I have sent the STL- file, to a young friend of mine, who does have a printer.

Technology is grand and I am tickled with myself that I am able to dabble in it. :ROFLMAO:

Dave~

Great project! Applause for learning the new 3D technology. (Hope Santa brings you that printer....)

On the other hand, those zip ties are a big step up from the hose clamps I would have used - although - my zip ties would match each other, of course!

All the best,

SJS
