October - What's on your Work Bench?

Nice sprigs Bob! Saw quite a few up on the north end during early teal season. Also, killed quite a few in both Saskatchewan and North Dakota. Hopefully, you'll get some close enough to smell your Maduro and, see your Fedora... pg

Good morning, Tom~

Nice! Moby Dick in juvenile plumage? I cannot tell from your photos: Is it life-size?

All the best,

SJS

Green winged teal carved from the middle of an eider! this decoy is being donated to benefit the Rhode Island Youth Waterfowl hunt on October 24.

Thanks Jode. The brant looks great too. I think I could part with this one if a buyer comes along. Katie can't keep everything! Haha.

Dennis,

Looks just like the Dennison I just worked on for someone. What did you use for the insert & toneboard, or did you already have one?

Finished that "special" frond pair, but will hold off posting pics 'til after they've been "gifted."

Meanwhile, I decided to try a silly of a Great Blue to include in my hunting rig. Got the idea to do this after saving this picture to my files a few years back.

Here's where I got to yesterday:

Makes me wonder if a palm-frond pickleweed, stick-up would be a good addition go along with it.

YES! That sounds like a great idea.

I had Spencer Tinkham over to my shop last weekend (he goes to college here in Texas, though he's from Virginia.) Anyway I had two redheads carved and we were talking paint, something I have had very little experience watching other people do.

He painted the bird on the left, a few days later I painted the bird on the right. You can see we have slightly different styles and skill levels :D

Bob I knew Mr Dennison I used to visit his shop before he passed away. Another famous call maker named Mr Son Cochran from Reel Foot taught me how to make duck calls when i was a lot younger. I have made about 300 calls but give most of them away to kids. When Mr Cochran passed away i donated a carved call to The Reel Foot Duck Call show in memory of him.

Dang Dennis awesome call!
The entire Cochran family including Sonny are a legendary call makers...that's quite a legacy you're carrying on there

That redhead looks great, Dave! It would be awesome to watch someone like Spencer paint a bird. I could use a lesson like that...which gives me an idea for a different post so as not to hijack the thread...
