Scarfing....

Interested to see what you are using to make the scarf, belt sander?
I'm looking forward to seeing your build and progress, I picked up a used copy of Sam's book recently and a set of Cackler plans may be headed my way soon........
Best,
Bob

I was thinking about a pocket knife.... but now I think I will use 36 grit grinding wheel on my electric 4.5" grinder... to get the bulk of it, then I will use a belt sander to finish it.

I used the belt sander last time... I am hoping it will turn out like I like.

Phil,
I bought a inexpensive, hand held power planer. It worked like a dream, to get it close enough for the belt sander. Also I have used the planer a bunch since then. Cool tool.

Good choice to skip the pocket knife. Last time I used a belt sander and was very happy with the result. A hand held power planer sounds like a good idea, just never used one.

No troubles with "chip out" with meranti or okoume using a planer? Are you going across the panels or perpendicular?

No, you go from the center of the plywood, towards the edge. Also at an angle, as long as you're aiming towards the edge, no worries. Try scrap first!

Phil,

On the 3/8" and thicker stock I used 1:8. On 4mm stock I used 1:12. Obviously it's easier to do a longer scarf on thinner stock but also gave me better piece of mind - not that I know for sure that it's any stronger. With a belt sander 1:8 on 3/8ths inch takes enough time and I believe is plenty strong enough.

How do you scarf panels with a table saw Tod? I'm with you Phil, scarfing is my absolute least favorite part of building!

I know it's kinda late in the conversation here, but maybe for future reference.

I made up a jig for my circular saw to make my scarf joints. I think I still have it as a matter of fact. Now if I can only find it...

Then I used a very sharp hand block plane to clean up the joint. Aside from the time spent on the jig, actually cutting the scarf was quick, accurate and easy.

crap.... I forgot to buy wood flour.. I know that I can substitute cooking flour. Can I use straight cabosil?

While looking around the Internet I came across this scarfing jig and thought it might be useful to post here if it hasn't been already.....
