Suggestions on duck hunting backpack

Looking for one that is not too big not too small. Need to carry couple pairs of gloves, couple boxes of shells, spotlight, calls, hat, mask, and a few other things. Waterproof would be nice. Lots of pockets great. Hard bottom so I can set it in snow or whatnot and not get damp/wet. Waist belt.

Anything else I should be looking for feature wise?

I think you found it. If I'm not mistaken one of those gals is able to freeze water. Might be handy to have along. Freeze all the water around me except for one tiny spot for me to put some fries and for he ducks to land.

..... and if you have daughters, they'll all want to be duck hunters!!!

Actually, I'll bet you can find this in Camo at the "new" Cabelas.....Mebbe in the 'Bargain Cave' ;-)

There are a lot of them out there Mark. I think many by Avery are good bags BUT I have never found one that was waterproof. Every bag I had used that confounded double zipper flap on the top and the stuff inside always got wet - from rain, wave splashing, dog shacking, etc. I finally got sick and tired of having to dry everything out all the time and started using a camo plastic ammo box. It won't fit everything you have listed but most of it. Mine has an additional compartment on top that I put face mask and ear plugs in as well as a couple of 'special purpose' shells. The inside is large enough for 2 boxes of shells, call lanyard, snacks, sandwich, wool gloves, rubber decoy gloves, neck gaiter, GPS, AND a smaller thermos. Everything I need for a days hunt. My spotlight stays in the boat all the time. I never have to dry my stuff out anymore and because it's smaller than a lot of the bags, I have eliminated some of the stuff I used to "need" but never used. If one isn't big enough, get two.

Actually, I'd have to agree with Pete. They hold up to a lot of abuse, mud, & water. The plastic boxes have always worked well for me as my "possibles" box and for shells. Calls, shooting glasses, licences, limb saw, compass, matches, spare truck keys, facemask, extra gloves, TP, etc, etc.

I do like the extra shell carrier for in the boat, but will also put shells in the possibles box when walking in to a field hunt in order to consolidate what I need to carry.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm looking for ways to free up my hands and thus the desire for a back pack. I do have a couple of nice bags but they require free hands to carry. Trying to put a couple of things on my back.

Found some here. No hard bottoms that I can find but low prices and seem to be well received.

Mark,
What about an Army surplus Alice pack and frame, with a dry bag inside? Cheap to buy, durable, lots of pockets and with the dry bag inside the contents would stay dry. They come in a medium and large sizes.

Mark,

I use one of these when I need to make sure I have some warmer layers and some extra dry dry gloves etc. Waterproof and easy to carry.

I also always have my phone in one of these cases hunting or cycling, highly recommend getting one if you do not have one already.

REI usually has them in stock.

Mark, I remember seeing backpacks in school with hard rubber bottoms. Like this

I know Jansport also made some like that and Jansport was a great backpack for school with all the books I had to lug around. I used the same one through high school and college and still use it for traveling, though it is a little patched up in a couple spots.

You could perhaps be able to make it mostly water resistant by spraying the heck out of it with the Kiwi Camp Dry spray stuff.

I don't know how waterproof or how sturdy the bag is but Drake makes a hard bottomed backpack

Or you could get a dry bag backpack like andrew posted (and if you google "dry bag backpack" you get a bunch of options) and keep a back pack inside that.

Mark,

This company is out of NC, and a few of my friends have these bags and love them. For what you get the pricing doesn't seem unreasonable either..... Hope this helps,

I bought a cabela's waterfowl backpack many years ago. The material is water proof, but the seams are not sealed. The ruck sack style top with a draw string and a flap work to keep rain out. the ruck sack style side pockets are huge and hold a thermos but they are not deep enough to lock the thermos in with the flap. The bottom is heavy duty PVC coated nylon like for raft tubes.

The biggest issue with the pack is that it falls over no matter how I load it. It will always roll over onto its "face" or back side. When I set it with the straps down it still seems to want to flip over for some reason.

It comes with those duck straps for hanging birds by their head/neck. That sucks when you are climbing through the alder swamp with a limit of birds swinging around wildly down by your thighs. Horrible idea to have a loose load while moving through the woods.

Mark,

I have one of these for walk in hunts or when I need extra room for stuff. It will hold a large amount of gear. The outside compartments are large enough to hold a standard size Stanley thermos on one side and on the other side I carry my rain gear and possibles box. The pouch on the front is large enough for my binoculars and range finder. I carry assorted items (calls, keys, phone, flashlights) in the main portion in plastic containers so I'm not forced to dig around making noise, shell containers, lunch container. There is still room to fold up extra fleece pullover, gloves, stocking cap etc. This weekend deer hunting with the temps reaching the teens for the first time this year I'm adding a colman gas bottle and survival heater incase I or on of our party gets wet or cold.
