Sunfish Hull

I checked the West Marine website and the only structural filler I can find is polyester based. Is the this the one you used?

Joe

Yes that is the stuff sorry for the confusion. I just looked on their website and the only confusing thing is that it claims the color is white. I used this mainly to fill the voids and make a smooth surface to fiberglass. I am not sure I would use it on it's own for holes that penetrate the hull. It cures quickly and grinds smooth.

don't know much about sailing but find it odd that your cockpit is in the front of boat when my in sunfish it was in the stern????

The cockpit is midship. The mast hole is just forward. It is located where every Sunfish I have ever seen is.

your right the picture I was looking at I had already cut two feet off the back making it look like the cockpit was closer to the stern.

Nothing better than what I posted previously. I made transom out of two layers of 3/4 AB marine plywood that I scribed to the hull. I used thickened epoxy to glue transom to hull and then lid to transom. I glassed inside and out with overlapping layers of 6 oz fiberglass and epoxy resin (US Composites). Sorry I did not take more photos of the transom under construction.

Hi Joe,

Here are some pics of my boat. Sorry I don't have construction pics. I cut about 2 feet off of the stern. I used 1/4 plywood for the deck. Because I wanted more crown in the deck. I installed a atv battery for lights.

Dale really nice work, I have a long way to go to match your glassing skills. What size motor do you use on your boat. Are you using a log shaft?

Shawn,

I used a short shaft 6 hp. But....... I found out with so much rocker in the hull, you're better off with a 2.5 or 3hp. You get the same speed, without the weight of the heavier motor. The boat is very stable, and seaworthy, but she aint no speed burner.

I have a little 2 hp evinrude i used to use on a canoe that i thought would be enough for poking around in ponds. Long runs she's a trailer queen getting towed behind the duckboss 15 or my sons starcraft 16.

Joe,

Sorry, but I don't remember. I have since passed the boat down to one of OLD Leonard's sons.

Cut the deck of an "Aqua Finn" open this afternoon. Just like a sunfish. I'm on my way to an Open water type layout sort of frankenboat. Will take some pics and post em here as I go. If I maintain interest that is. Just making it up as I go. No plan.

Wish me luck.
