TDB Classic remolding time

I pulled this to the top, I think it sums up Eric and my opinion on the subject well.:

Tony, on a personal note, nice work on reviving the molds. TDB has always been a very popular design, good to see you bringing new life to it. If you have any questions on the links, feel free to PM me for clarification.

Thanks Chuck!

Okay gang next step complete. Today we put the skin coat of glass on the hull and deck. This process is the most important layer. It provides a good solid barrier coat and is where Air bubbles are found. We used 1.5oz mat and its all hand laid and rolled. You can view the photos below of each the hull and deck with the raw glass in place and then a photo of it after its been rolled out with resin.
Next step is to build the structural layers. This will be done tomorrow. Stay tuned

I thought about starting a completely new Construction thread only, but don't want to upset anyone.

Dont worry about upsetting anyone, if they dont like it, they can take their ball and go home. :)

Just talk to Eric or Chuck and get it clear what they expect if you are concerned, members of the peanut gallery that don't understand the forum rules can pound salt and have been told as much. For myself, I love the pictures and don't see any problem with the build pictures or modification questions. I don't own a TDB and have no plan to, but I very much understand their place in history and anm glad that you are sharing the rebirth of the company with us. For anyone who likes boats and building it is very interesting. I'd say I'd like more detail if anything.

Thank You, what kind of detail would you like? Remember somethings are trade secrets and if I went that far my shop may end up burning down. LOL I have a strong weakness for writing and story telling. especially when I got to type it or write it. come out to the shop and then I can just show ya. hehehehe

Pretty much trade secrets :). No like you are doing, the layup and materials is great, I appreciate it and enjoy seeing it.

Thanks,

This started as, and is, a duck boat BUILDING page after all.
I see no problem with anyone showing us how a duck boat, commercial or not, is built, especially if they are asking for advice on how to make the product better from our point of view.

Just make sure I get one for product testing. :)

Hey, wait, I could be the first "TDB Pro-Staffer"!!!!!!! :)

I agree, I like to see boat being built. I don't care if they are wood, fiberglass or Aluminum, commercial or just one. I see nothing wrong with this post. There has been nothing remotely like a sales pitch. So keep it coming. I'm glad to see the tdb coming back. I was ready to buy one back in '94, them my wife went and got pregnant. Oh well, maybe someday.

I know Carl is just trying to help, but if you are looking to have one tested, I'm alot closer.

What Tod said! Looks good Tony. someday I'll make it back up there with some more time on my hands.

DeWayne, how about you get sponsor or supportor added to your profile? 'bout time.

OK Tod, I'll bite; why do you think I need to become a sponsor here? I honestly can't recall promoting any business I am involved with on this site.

Clear enough for me:

From Support duckboats.net (http://duckboats.net/...?do=payment_donation;)"

If you think Tony is showing us all this out of the goodness of his heart you've been out in the cold too long Tod.It's spamming pure and simple.Look at his past posts. If it doesnt have to deal with Herters decoys and layouts both of which he sells. His post count would be 25 LOL.Tony has called out others on the Fuge for selling products without being a sponsor.Whats right is right.

Bob, I'm going by Eric's rules. I know why Tony is here, just like most (or is it all?) our other commercial participants. How many have we seen come and go over the past 15 years? I'm not too worried about it, if Bankes wanted to come here and show us about his boats being built I'd watch too. We have hoardes of decoy carvers here too, I've never heard of one refusing to sell to a member :). Not a big deal. Once they stop giving and only self promote, they will get run off and that will be the end of that or maybe he will turn out to be a long term community member and support the site. Of all things I know, Eric doesn't let himself get taken advantage of and his vision of what the forum should be is clear - I respect that. I trust the system, I've seen it work many times over the years.

Anyone who is concerned about the site should pony up some cash in support of the forum as you have done.

As long as the system works and everyone realizes whats going on I'm fine with it but I do wish more people would pony up more T.The site doesn't run itself.

Bob, I can't deny that ultimately one can see this is spam. I own the company and will be selling the boats so yes. Essentially many will consider it spamming the product. The Duck Boat TDB has been around for decades quite frankly longer than many products on the market today and is Major component in waterfowling history and where we are today. Without the TDB there wouldnt be many of the boats guys hunt from today. Duckboats.net has a great following of guys who have been around all these years and seen the company start, change hands a few times go through the bad and recover and then finally just fall off the face of the earth. We are bringing the company and boats back. And regardless of what a few think, the goal here is not to spam the boats. trust me we have a waiting list 2 pages long from phone calls we receive daily about the boats and availability and by posting the process and updates both here and our own website we can help to get the word out so people know where we are going and whats happening. Simple as that. I am trying to bring info and the process to those of this site so they too can see how a boat is built not just a TDB boat as the process is the same basically for any boat build and some will gain great knowledge from the posts and pictures. If at anytime the powers here feel its out of line all they have to do is say stop or delete the threads. Trust me when I say they are watching i am sure.

Now if everyone could please enjoy the thread and if there is any personal issues with me or TDB etc. feel free to give me a call at 937-418-7207 and lets leave the thread for what its for. Readers enjoyment.

Thank you.

Tony, I have personal issues, but not with you, just in general, can I still call?

All kidding aside, I feel that site management's stance is laid out well through the links I posted, and through PMs between Tony and myself yesterday, Tony knows where I stand officially and personally on the thread. I'm all for a thread derailment, they are lots of fun, entertaining and enlightening, but I think we've seen the SPAM card thrown around enough and in my official opinion, Tony is giving more than he's taking right now, so lets put that one to bed.

Wow, long day today and seems not much was accomplished. Today we cut the triaxial cloth and made patterns for the boat. Allowing for min 4" overlap everywhere but the hull keel where it overlaps 6" all the way bow to stern. Then we traced the cutouts onto kraft paper so we can assure each boat is built using the exact same configurations. We will being 2 layups of 1 layer 1.5oz matt and 1808 triaxial cloth on both Hull and Deck. This should make them basically bullet proof with a keel thickness of double that. Looking forward the 14ft Classic will have a floor lner mold that will be 2 sealed compartments for floatation foam under the floor. So the next step is to complete the sealed drain chamber under the floor liner to insured a completely water tight floor liner. This means we must make 2 new stringer molds to complete this and in doing so we are going to have to layup the floor liner and cut it(destroying it) to make the stringer plugs to make the molds from. The stingers will be 2 U-Beams that will run down the keel 3" off center on both sides. The tabs of the U beam will be glassed to the hull and then a bead of 5200 will be placed on the top of the beam before the floor is set in place. In doing this we hope to create much needed space in the stern bilge area by eliminating the big foam chambers on both sides. We will still be able to place floation foam in the underside of the aft deck instead of down on the floor where space is needed.

Sorry only 1 boring photo of todays work. Things will start taking shape next week. Its Friday and the boss(wife) said we are done for a couple days. Yea Right!

If the wife knew I snapped this photo she wouldn't be happy. She is finishing up the Aft Deck template in the photo. It will be done in 2 pieces to allow a overlapped seaon down the center for more strength on the top of the deck.

My wife and I will hand build every boat we build. She hates building boats but is very very good at what she does.

Hope everyone has a wonderfull weekend will report back when an update is available.
