The last September Duck Decoy, prior to this season.

It withstood the back yard toss test, and is ready to go to work.

Drake feeding Wood Duck 15.7 oz.

Solid Sugar Pine, with cedar dowel rod from crown of head deep into the breast, and nail in bill.

Disregard stand, as it will not be used while hunting, a hardwood dowel will be used.

I love your Woodrows Vince, so animated.

All the carvers are coming down the home stretch for Tuckerton, myself included.
These are two companion pieces to the Crisfield style hen Black duck I completed a few weeks ago.

Strongly influenced by eastern shore decoys from the mid 20th century, they are oversized, smooth bodied, with simple yet elegant paint.

I didn't make the August thread as hoped, most of these were done last month but I wanted to get all 6 finished and float them in a body of water other than a wash basin. Tried a few different patterns and paint things and enjoyed the process. Black cork with basswood heads, red cedar bottom/tail boards - but the smallest hen is hollowed willow. She is my favourite bird so far. We seldom see drakes in full plumage in my area so did just the one for fun. All self right with the oak keels and one hen needs a bit more balancing to float evenly.

I'm now working on a pair of wood ducks. As I was getting close to what I considered "done" on the body of the drake I realized that the carving I did early on blocking out the main body shapes was making it difficult to get important features later on. It reminded me of someone on here discussing having great patterns but not having the ability/understanding to turn them into decoys. I'm really enjoying the process and have really learned a lot with my first dozen-ish decoys. I'm very much looking forward to hunting over my own blocks this year - thanks everyone for the help and tutorials thus far!

Jode -

Thank you.

Your two drakes look very good.

I am very partial to Black Ducks, but man that drake Mallard has it all. Very easy on the eyes.

Hope the Tuckerton show is successful and a fun time.

Best regards
Vince

Mark -

Your Teal rig should work just fine.

There is a lot of satisfaction hunting over your own decoys, especially your first rigs.

Even though you may create many decoys in the future, ya always recall yer first gunners.

Lots of good work on the cusp of another season.

Best regards
Vince

Matt,

Made me think of this boys first duck. He's got two little ones of his own now. Hope I get to see his take their firsts.

Bob,

Gotta stay in shape so we can participate in these Firsts with our grandkids.

Working on some cork canvasbacks. Haven't carved in a while so it feels good to be back at it. Cork bodies, white pine heads, keels and tail boards. 2 hens and a drake. I coated the bottoms up to waterline with raw boat builders epoxy. That firmed the cork up very nicely. MarkView attachment 20190923_170554.jpg

Thanks Vince, I dig what your doing and seeing your stuff breaks me out of my hermit mode, and makes me want to share. Tuckerton is always an event. I?ll have no voice left by the end of the show, but seeing and talking with like minded folks, spreading the Gospel of the outdoors is well worth a little laryngitis! lol

Made some progress on my workbench the past couple of weekends. The overhead cabinets are done. I'll move tools and other items into the cubbies this weekend. The overhangs will be a handy to mount lights and hang tools. The gap in the middle is where I'll set up dust collection for the slider saw.
It Looks like the type of place Id feel right at home. Very nice Eric.

Jode, you ever make it down here I'll pull out all kinds of decoy wood for you to carve. Thanks.

Eric,

Please post photos of you miter saw dust pickup system once you have it installed. I have a downdraft in the well behind the saw and it doesn't work very well.

Heck, I'd settle for just have a few of my ashes scattered around in your shop. Maybe for a day, I could give it that "lived in" look. It would be an honor to get sucked up in your dust collection. [w00t]
