Winter is here. Who’s hunting?

Maine has been freezing up fast the last 10 days. Even the running water has been freezing up. Time to move to the salt

Been getting after them, first the bomb cyclone and then 10 days of clear and cool with east winds. Neal and Todd will understand the east winds. I have had fun hosting family and friends. The best is seeing my 11 year grandson outshoot his 35 year old dad.

Wasn’t on the x. Whole drive and boat ride out, I thought I was wasting time. Mallard have been very in tune with exactly where they want to be. Can take a lot to change their mind this time of year. I spent a good chunk on Sunday scouting. Impossible to really hunt where they wanted to be due to how deep water is, so I had to settle on a little bitty cove 800-1000 yards from where they are a magnet to. Turned out to be magical. First shot at 7:06, done by 7:42 and I didn’t even bust up the main honey hole they’re using. I used a mojo on a 12 foot pole to grab attention, but otherwise once that little bit of sun hit the flocked decoys, birds were falling in vertically. First time I’ve used a mojo in 3 years. Probably my fav hunt of the year. Gonna be a long week at work, can’t wait to get back out there next weekend.

Last day of our duck season is today. Freeze-up last week caused me to put all my gear away then today it's 40 degrees! Go figure. It's par for the course though. Plenty of divers to shoot but not to be. Looking forward to next year.

We were out Saturday fighting ice hard on the salt. Saw nothing but buffleheads in what little open water we had to work with. I'm sure it's opened up again now, but Thursday-Friday-Saturday look cold again.

Keeping busy with some long walks during the mid December slow down!!
What kind of dog is that? I was just having this conversation last night with the ol lady that I might want to try something a little different, like a labradoodle maybe, for my next hunting dog. I love love love my labs, but I wouldnt mind maybe a pooch that doesnt shed as much.

Cool bird. Either luecistic or has some park duck in the gene pool.

Pretty sure he’s a Goldendoodle, he was a stray at a deer hunt camp. He’s got a great temperament and a little tough to hide in the blind. No shedding has been a plus!! I’ve pretty much only owned spaniels, so he’s a little bigger than I’m used to.

I think hes a fantastic size. I may just give a labradoodle a try for my next. Itll be another 4-5 years, but already thinking. I miss my hunting buddy cuddled up on my lap in the evenings. Not because of shedding, just my current little girl doesnt like to be inside the house at all. Been that way since she was a puppy, very very odd. But I also like how clean my home is now, especially in the summer. Super cool of you to give this one a home and even better he turned into a retriever for you. Thanks for sharing!

Similar coat but a much longer hunting pedigree if you can find an Irish Water Spaniel. Think a bigger-than-Springer spaniel, with a wooly and curly coat. Looked at them hard as a potential waterfowl/partridge/woocock dog for me and my allergies, but alas they still made me sneeze. Fell in love with the ones I met before I found that out.
