    Nails Breaking

Phil, Rich hit the nail on the head. I walk my pup 5 - 6 miles a day and I still have to trim his nails regularly. If I don't keep his nails short, he'll split them in no time -- particularly on winter ice. I'm skeptical that any product can prevent an active dog from splitting...

    goose hunting in the snow

I read somewhere that manipulating snow on cropland is considered baiting. I never did more research to confirm it. It may not be true. Or, it could be an example of an assinine bureaucratic policy. Do your homework and be careful.

    Best dog book

Paul, The Ten-Minute Retriever is geared towards puppyhood and the first year or so of training. With it, I easily established a solid foundation. For advanced training, I used Butch Goodwin's manual. I recommend it. With my next pup, I plan to supplement the 10-Minute Retriever with...

FME paint--how long before boat gets wet?

Jeff, In Vermont, I've found that it takes about two weeks for FME to cure -- especially in September. For the next week or so, make sure the boat is outside whenever the weather forecast is good. After that, I've found that the boat can weather just fine. I just finished painting my...

    ? re bbsb decoy racks

Sarge, A while back, George S posted a solution for the excess spray problem -- spray rails mounted on the underside of the hull. For pictures, follow this link: http://www.duckboats.net/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=103752;#103752 He describes how he attached them here...

    Help buying a new gun

Joe, I was in this exact situation almost 4 years ago. For me, gun fit made the decision easy. The SX3 just didn't fit -- not enough drop-at-comb or heel. And, the shims that come with the gun don't adjust drop. The Xtrema2 fit me like a glove and that's what I went home with. Don't...

    Toledo

Don't discount his puddlers either! I have a half-dozen black duck blocks from Tom and wouldn't trade them. I'd only add hand-carved cedar to supplement the rig. On the diver front -- a friend of mine ordered magnum buffies from Tom, and they are very nice.

    yamaha 20 h.p.motors

Cas, I have a buddy with a HT 14. It is powered with a 25-hp Yamaha 4-stroke -- awesome motor but heavy! That boat simply doesn't perform well as a planing hull. It has too much rocker and too narrow of transom. With two gunners, a dog, and gear, it takes forever to plane. Once on...

    Nova Scotia eider tub

I was just about to ask, "They use ballast, right?" The center of bouyancy on that 'box is spooky. Where do the ballast stones go? In the 'box? Or, are they hung from the bottom, outside the 'box? Really neat stuff. Love the blocks too.

    re Heavy Shot

Sarge, I've always found #2 Hevi to be devastating on geese. Supposedly the odd shape and mish-mash of pellet sizes contributes to the effectiveness. Who knows? Do you know which Hevi-shot you have? They offer two waterfowl loads -- Hevi-shot Goose and Hevi-shot Duck -- which have...

    how you use your BBSB

Bill, I just have one season's worth of experience in a BBSB, but I'll offer my observations. I've used my boat in 3 scenarios: 1) layout hunting in open water for divers, 2) layout hunting in rice flats for puddlers (fully grassed, as in "be the muskrat hut" concealment), and 3) grassed...

What is the perfect open water / skinny water boat

Nah. I just keep him to windward and everything works out fine. Plus, I read somewhere that you never, ever under any circumstances spoil a bird dog. :^) But seriously, I keep a hatch over the dog'pit opening when I'm running. I strap my decoy bags over the bow and the hatch so they...

What is the perfect open water / skinny water boat

Chris, What do you mean by "open water?" Are you just crossing a large water body to get to the area that divers frequent? Planning to float hunt with a boat blind? Layout hunt? Or, do you plan to hunt from shore once you get to the spot? In the boat? Or from a blind? Also, why do...

    Trailer-less duck boat

I think this would be a really neat rig with a few mods: http://www.butlerprojects.com/boats/montanaguideboat/index.htm For one thing, it needs less freeboard fore and aft -- very easy to do. And , I'd use 5 mm okoume to offset (some of) the weight of fiberglassing the exterior.

    Stevens 512 Goldwing

Gary, The only inexpensive, reliable o/u's I'm familiar with are Lanbers. They are a Spanish gun. I've owned one for 8 years and am very happy with it. I think most inexpensive Turkish-built guns are a gamble. You should be able to find Lanbers on any of the on-line auctions.
