August - What's new on your workbench?

Just finished up these 2 birds-my 3rd and 4th wooden ducks. Hollow bass with white pine heads, also my first attempt at texturing-slowly I'm filling up my diver rig with all handmade decoys!

Might actually finish a decoy or two next month. Got a few workbench quality dekes I'll snap some pics of tomorrow for August. Finishing a new deck-mold for this boat now. Hull Mold came out nice. Hull parts built so far poppin out smooth-easy.

Good stuff Guys. I always like the Bench-Thread.

12' x 42". Gonna be nice cause at 90-100lbs it won't require a trailer and some of the small motors with attached gas tanks will push it quite well. It also rows pretty good.

Here's a couple cedar dekes I've been putzing with. Grainy cell-phone pics. Greenwing is solid-body, rasped and won't require any additional sanding. Just old school paint-job.

Excellent craftsmanship - and a fine eye - on both the boat and the birds!

I am curious about the eyes on your bird. They look like you carved them from the wood. Did you use some sort of punch to encircle them (I'm thinking of the same punch I use when installing grommets - a short piece of pipe with a sharp inside bevel on one end). It's a great look.

Working on a couple of stilts, first ones. Rushed the back a little, plus I got the feather outlines a little lighter than I wanted. Probably gonna repaint that area. These have been a lot of fun and a welcomed break from the ducks decoys.

All great decoys Jode. You must just be thrilled so is involved in carving and painting. My daughter informed me yesterday that she is "allergic" to cedar. This was when I was asking her to help me sweep and clean up after running the planner. I bet when we cutout a decoy she is fine carving it!

LOL, That is great! yes Allison really loves it and the best part is she will be hunting with me this fall. We are going to put some of my recently passed retreiver into that black duck so she will still be with us in spirit.

We are going to make a rig of very simple burnt cork black ducks to gun with as well. ( I'll do the heads and her the bodies.)

Its been years since I messed with cork, but the burnt bodies are just so pleasing and simple.
 
Jode - Nice bunch there. Smew, that's different.

Bob - Cool Scaup. I could use a couple hundred of those on the River by me here in FL.

Steve - I used to used a copper punch I'd sharpened just like you suggested. I found though it had a tendency to cleave the wood in some cases removing a slice of eyeball I wanted to remain. So I just began to carve them altogether. Here's two old pairs with the punchout eyes. Punch tool may work better with a lot of heat prior to the pressure being applied. I use N White Cedar so it may work better with something else for heads. I don't experiment with basswood, tupelo, or pine so I couldn't say for sure just guessing.
