December Workbench

SJ & Jode

Thanks. They are actually working calls which was my plan all along but I wasn't sure if I could get them to blow properly since they have a giant tone board and reed. They do. Now I've got to come up with a lanyard of sorts.

Eric, are Hambone calls still in production. Have not heard that name since high school when they were the must have call if you hunted at Swan Creek.

Scott

They are not. C.H. Amaden passed away a number of years ago. The calls have risen in value substantially so if you have one take care of it.

I am in the home stretch now. All that is left is to put the finish and decals on them. I've been working on the build videos the entire time so that is just about complete too. I'm really glad I took this project on. I expanded my repertoire with the patternmaker lathe and made some jigs I can use on future projects.

Good morning, Eric~

Wonderful work on this project - congratulations as you near the finish line.

When I look at the image above, though, two thoughts cross my mind....

1. Bowling alley....

2. You know, I never have seen Eric in the flesh. Just how BIG is he?????

Our first snow of the season is starting right now. Instead of the shop, I've been scurrying around the farm and house getting everything - including several gunning vessels - either covered up, ready to keep us warm, or ready to move snow. We are looking at just 5 inches or so today - nothing like we've seen further West.

All the best,

SJS

Steve

The bowling pin analogy never occurred to me but now that you mention it, I can see the similarity. As for me I'm a quite average 5'9" so they look and feel big in my hands. There definitely is some satisfaction holding one. I think deep down everyone likes really BIG ordinary everyday items and these are definitely novelty things made with just as much attention to detail as a normal call.

Steve , I feel you on this winter work! Although I’m currently on flight back to Michigan. We flew out on thanksgiving and feel like I left on a fall day and are returning in January! I still have to move some lawn equipment into shed, aluminum boat is in the water(hoping the current and night time lows keep it open water), and really wanted to re clean gutters again before winter but appears she’s got a good bite on us!
