Thanks Derek, that's a neat looking deke , bet it will float great.

I've never tried a foam bird, but did make some crab bouy decoys years back. You can't kill those things! LOL!

Love to see it when it's got some paint on it.

The shorebirds are awesome Sean and Jode!!

Pat; just packed up the Gregory preening Pin for the Apopka Old Florida Outdoor Festival.

It will be next to a few Furia fronds and the Duckboats.net traveling decoy in the UW-F booth tomorrow and Sunday.

Finally got finished carving and sanding these guys. Got sealed with two coats of cork sealer earlier this week, and this afternoon I got them primed and textured with 50/50 mix of gesso and texturing paste. I mixed up a batch of 2:1 Burnt umber to Black and I'm pretty happy with it for the color of the bodies. I'm lacking a recipe for the head colors on a black duck. Anyone what to give me a idea of where to start?

The pics here are of John Bourbon's Teal, and then 2 pictures of cork that may look familiar, because Charlie of Charlie and Titan sold it to me about 2 years ago when he was downsizing his gear. I finally am getting around to shaping the bodies. The head on the Tan cork body was a head that Bourbon had sitting on the shelf and is there for effect only. I will have get to work on a couple heads at some point.

Thanks k folkman! I have Bruce Burk's game bird carving book. I actually picked it up at a Discount store for 7.99. Most of it is more decorative then I'm looking for right now, but the one thing I do like is that it shows color samples and what colors were used in the mix. I spent a lot of time this afternoon looking through images of black ducks to try and match a color. I think I'm still a little too light.

The body color I used was was burnt umber and black, the head was white, black and raw umber. The bill is yellow ochre and a touch of black. We'll see how it looks after I dry brush the crown etc.

It's a mandarin duck. The samari warriors used to give a pair of them to their son in laws as a warning to look after the daughter as well as they looked after the birds. They would employ a chap/chaps to look after the birds only in an avery. Big problems if they croaked it.

Mandarin duck. Relative of wood ducks. Native of Asia but naturalized in some locations in North America.
