Long Island Ice Scooter - Rehab efforts - 8/30 update, Anchor box and input for motor box

I have been busy getting the Dodge and Krowl, Great South Bay Ice Scooter rehabbed. Steve Sanford's research and expertise have been very valuable to my efforts.
I started by stripping off all the hardware.

I then sanded and prepped the bottom for paint. I was not happy with the glass printing through so easily so I painted wet on wet 3 coats of epoxy first.

What is interesting is that there is some copper or brass sheeting under the glass. On the bottom it goes back at least 18" and wraps the nose and front deck some. When I drilled holes for the new bow eye and the fairlead it was all through this metal.

Next was 3 coats of paint.

The paint on this hull is an experiment.... I am using Behr Porch and Floor paint. Silver Spur was a reasonable match to the color on the hull when I got her. It was inexpensive at $27 per gallon, and then got a $10 rebate too! Rolls on really nice, and clean up is easy. It is a simple hull with not much hardware so if it does not wear then I can sand it and paint it in a few years.
With the bottom and floors painted and cured a few days in this VA heat, we flipped her and started on the decks.

While waiting for things to dry, I worked other parts of the project.

Some scaling on a photo, I came up with a sail plan and then got busy with a canvas paint drop cloth.

I pressed the hem and inserted some webbing. This was all pinned up and handed off to Mom on July 4th. On the 8th, the sail was sewn and mailed back to me!
I then installed the brass grommets.

I have already acquired the grapnel anchor and navy anchor for this rig. One of the skills I learned in Scouts, but never mastered really was line splicing. Steve's details have inspired me and so with the help of youtube and some evening in the easy chair I have mastered it. So all my lines are being properly finished now. Splices, whippings and seizings... stay tuned!
So now onto the scooter pole.

I was able to get a couple hardened plow blades from Brian Garman.
The first one was smaller and I got one spade shaped from it, but took no pictures of the before. The second one was large enough to get 2 spades made from. I am making 3 currently. Once for Brian's sneakbox, and one each for the scooter and my BBSB.

Working some 1/2" square stock for the shaft, pike and spade supports.

And then Brian did up the welding, and I did the grinding!

They have since gotten a couple coats of Rustoleum Galvanizing paint. One is mounted in the 8ft ash pole I found on-line, will the other 2 await poles (ordered 3, only 1 arrived so far).

Great progress on an awesome project! If you need help with the line splicing or any knot tying for that matter look up knots by grogg. Awesome step by step videos/slide shows on every aspect of knot tying and splicing and such

Here is the link to grog's website. He also has YouTube videos I believe

Trailer Fitting was done early on... but not documented here yet:
Because of the shape of the bow, and how I intended to draw her onto a trailer I wanted to snub on the sides not on the bottom as is normal. So some sketches and on-line searching to find the parts I thought I would need. A stop at the Eastern Marine Superstore in DE on the way to the May DHBP NJ gathering got a good start on the shopping list.
I had already stripped, sealed and painted the trailer. So then it was mock up time with the boat sitting on some bunks.
IMG_0877.jpg

After some fitting, and final fabrication the bow stop was completed, and painted to match.

Dave~

Everything looks great! The color is excellent - Schuyler Watts would certainly approve. I look forward to seeing it - and all its bits and pieces - in Tuckerton.

All the best,

SJS

Steve, thanks for your continued inputs.... the color is actually a close approximation to the color of the ice in your Ted Sanford picture. I had printed that out and carried it around a few weeks looking at swatches. I wanted a custom mix but found this stock color and decided it would be easier to get more if I need it. Turns out a gallon goes a long way! I have the hull, floors, and hard cover done and used half of it. The spars, pole and canvas won't use much more. I can use it on the Burdick scull when I do that next.

As Steve and I have corresponded, please note that the sail shape/plan is not appropriate to actually sail. This was a quick and dirty attention getter and photo-op prop. Easy to cut out and easier for Mom to sew. If I ever feel the need/desire to actually sail her, I will create a proper sail rig. Likely a Sprit or Lug rig with more sail area. My hope is that the mast I am building would suffice for either of them and I may need to build a different spar or 2 to make that change. For this summer, a simple canvas sail is what I have in the plans. I have more progress to share, but need to transfer the photos to photobucket first. Stay tuned. I'll update the date in the title when I add new content.

First coat of paint on the decks and hard cover.

Then 2 more coats of paint.

Next up was the details on the mast step plug. All I had to do here was route the edges, sand it a little then a couple coats of paint.

Then added some hardware so that it stayed in place.

Next up, the spars for the sail rig. The mast step is 2.5". Brian Garman is a great hunting partner.... not only does he have the same sickness we all have he also has many of the tools that I don't! In this case the tools that were critical is the bandsaw mill, and the hand power planer.

We started with a cedar that Brian had cut last fall for some boughs for a fixed blind.

20160716_132259.jpg

He squared it to about 3"
20160716_132717.jpg

Then I took it to the table saw where I took off the corners. An hour with a block plane and I had a pile of shavings, worked up a real sweat, and had not gotten very far. I then broke out the belt sander.... but the excessive heat was causing the belts to separate at the tape. A few hours more with the random orbital had me to this point.

IMG_0963.jpg
[/url]

On the way home from work this evening I stopped and picked up the power hand planer... less than an hour later the tapering was complete, and another 30 minutes with the RO sander had it mostly roughed into shape.

So you are all caught up now.... will be the weekend before I get much more done.

A little more to share. I counterbored a hole in the base of the mast. I then fit a ash plug/dowel to fit the hole in the floor.

So a couple other boxes checked.....

Throwing grapnel anchor and line finished.

IMG_0969.jpg

Layout anchor, buoy and ring line complete.

And the first Scooter Pole is complete.

Great work Dave. I like your choice of bow eye and fairlead a few posts ago, good and solid. Nice ice pole, the wheels are turning for a new project.

Dave, I've really enjoyed watching you work through this project. It looks like you're doing a great job on the rehab and I look forward to seeing her on the water

The heat here has been really oppressive. Tough to get anything done outdoors. So I managed to clean up the garage so I can move the scooter in for painting.

A small window AC makes it just bearable. But got to see the hull in the trailer again!

A little progress. After 3 tries I found a paint that was reasonable close match to the original.

I also got some paint on the sail.

After the sail baked in the sun I got started on rigging. Here is where I am as of today.

This weekend I plan to finish shaping the spars, and get them sealed/painted. Canvas is ordered for the cockpit cover and dodger, due next week.

Good morning, Dave~

Excellent progress!

Your interior color looks the same as the buff used on my Benjamin Hallock Scoooter. My Dad used Interlux "Sahara Buff" (a long-discontinued hue) on our old gaff sloop.

Does dreaming about using this vessel in ice and snow and wind help you get through the heat ???

All the best,

SJS
