March 2014 Workbench Thread

Bob, great looking chair. I could fall asleep dreaming of ducks at a moments notice. The table is absolutely beautiful.

I really enjoyed carving the Ross goose bust and decided to try it with a Pintail. This one is entirely carved from old growth white pine salvaged from a local barn built in the 1890's.

Still some final shaping and bill detail to finish.

Those bust birds are really cool. What's the final plan for them as far as diplay? A dowel up into the bottom to be displayed similar as a shorebird decoy? Or some sort of mounting device coming out of the curve to mount to a wall? Very nice either way.

Great job on that table, nice figured white oak.

Thanks, I am thinking about mounting the busts on oval black walnut bases. Glenn Sweet sent me a pic of a woodduck he had done awhile back and it almost had the appearance that the bust was floating in air. I really liked that look. Can't find the pic, maybe Glenn will post up a pic of it.
I created a very small flat spot on the bottom of each bust. Thinking about screwing it down from the underside of the base. Like the wall mount idea, I had not thought about that. Might have to give it some more thought before making a final decision.
If I was to carve one that would be mounted on the wall I am thinking that instead of cutting off the body on a 90 degree angle I would make a 45 degree cut so that I could mount it with a side profile instead of head on. In fact I am off to go draw a pattern right now! Thanks for the idea!!!!

Holy crap, this is shaping up to be one heck of a month folks...March is always my get back on the horse month.

Started drawing a laughing gull pattern tonight. I hope it lives up to everything else posted here so far this month.

Keep up the great work.
