New Year - January Workbench Thread 2014

Chuck there are six cedar and one of a lesser medium. The black cork decoy actually has me the most concerned and its why I have not painted it yet. I don't want to dress it up to much and I am trying to think of the simplest way to paint it. I am thinking just clean black and tan with a few hard lines for detail on the primaries. problem is I wont want to stop at the primaries. Hard lines feather detail on the whole thing had me a but concerned. Of course I can always paint over it and not show anyone what I did if its to terrible!

With the blizzards and zub zero temps lately staying inside and painting seems like the wise thing to do.

A 5x7 Hanging Can in acrylics. What started out as a small quick painting has been touched up 3 times since signing. :)

Actually I havea black on the painting bench now.

trying some new stuff out, trying to get away from the "soldier" look of my birds. saw some pics I liked and tried to capture that look in a decoy. Still has a lot of paint to be put on the bird this one is just in base coat stage right now. hollowed bass and oils

Tim, cool stuff. I like the old shotgun in there.

Brandon, Some of your mergatoids are pretty hard to beat. That being said I think these black ducks are my favorite from your bench so far.

This is just a base coat on my BWT. It's a new pose that I've never attempted before. So far, I just wet blended oils and applied them recklessly with only one brush so as to push myself into new painting territory. Because, it's only paint! Oh yeah, drinking good beer always helps reduce concerns of mistakes, haha!

Tom, nice color tones and hues on this canvasback, particularly the head. I would say you accomplished what you set out to achieve quite well!

David~

Bird looks great!

There's a lot to be said for using a single brush. I do so regularly - sometimes cleaning it between colors, sometimes just wiping it with a cloth. You can certainly get more subtle transitions and definitely learn some things.

Nice pose, too!

BTW: Synthetic filberts are my favorite brushes.

Hey I like that teal Dave. One brush painting is a great way to get blends. That bird is going to turn out very nice

Tom,
Nice curves on your Can. No soldier look to that one.

the rest of the crew got a bath yesterday to check their floating issues. Nothing needed correction. I got real lucky.

that whistler looks great. my favorite dekes are gunners that have a little extra flair.

i made a rig of foam scoters a while back but being 12" wide and 30" long they don't really fit in any of my "ponds" I'm going to bring them up to the gf's house to float them in her tub

Bob, I had a good belly laugh while viewing your photo.

I had my magnifier on because I couldn't find my "readers" while painting some feather splits on the wings on some redhead decoys on Saturday. I heard a pounding sound three times upstairs before it finally dawned on me that someone was knocking on the garage entrance door. I assumed Karen had locked herself out and had returned from snowshoeing with the hounds... I ran upstairs, paintbrush clenched in my teeth and magnifier still perched on my head, opened the door and said, "Hi, honey, did you manage to lock yourself out?" The very pretty young woman looking back at me was in her mid-twenties and dressed to go cross country skiing. Morgan never missed a beat on the uptake, even though her face-and very likely mine-turned brick red. She said, "No, sweetie, I just stopped by to pick up my new pair of skating poles Hunter gave you to cut down to fit me and put new handles on..."

I laughed so hard I spit the paintbrush out! Thanks for the reminder!
