Spring Turkey

Henrick,
Losing a bird sucks but anyone who has hunted turkey for any length of time has a story of the one that got away. The first Merriam that I ever shot was never recovered though we searched high and low for several hours. It was definitely a low point after two years of trying to tag a turkey in the Black Hills but it certainly made our success the following year that much sweeter. Hang in there!

We had a dozen Poults in our yard the other day and I nearly wrapped a tom around my bumper this morning. That sucker has been dodging vehicles out here by the orchards for a spell.

It is funny, out here you can kill a critter with your car and get a salvage tag after the incident, take it home to throw its remains in the freezer, but you aren't allowed to use an air gun or a blowgun/slingshot or a bird dog to take em down. Only archery/ scattergun, and none without a tag in hand.

Final Day Tomorrow. Hopefully I can find one because the last few days have been no gobbles, and no decoying. On Friday morning, I did manage to call a hen into 5 yards from over 200 yards away so that was cool anyway.

Henrick,
Very cool and always fun to call in any turkey!
This is just a thought but perhaps your yelp cadence is a tad slow since you called in a hen. A gobbler or jake yelp has a slower cadence than a hen yelp and might explain why that hen traveled such a distance. Perhaps she thought you were a gobbler! As I alluded to before, I learned from YouTube what a hen yelp sounds like because I am very hard of hearing and cannot hear them in the wild. Anyway, give that a try and good luck!

Well, no turkey to end the season. I can't say it was bad at all because I learned a lot, got better gear, and found new tips to use next season. It was a fun season and I will be buying another turkey tag next year. Until then time to fish all summer, hunt ducks, geese, pheasants, and all the other fun things in the fall. Thanks to everyone that helped out with giving some tips.

Henrick,
Heather and I were pulling for you all day! We are bummed that you didn't get your turkey but hey, if it were easy everyone would be doing it. If you have the time to watch a few videos, Dale Outdoors and the Mossberg Turkey Hunting channel on YouTube helped me a whole bunch learning how to kill turkeys. Like many others who have had to learn on their own, this is a relatively new sport, particularly in northern states. Our first few years were really tough but it just made us try that much harder. I suspect that you are the same. Good luck next year!
